Rather than measure, move chain, measure again, move chain again, etc., method of finding the tight spot, I stumbled on a method that for me made it easy.

After removing inspection cover and loosening the lock nut on the tensioner shoe, I set the primary chain to about 1/4 inch of up and down play.

I then rotate the rear tire (its off the ground and the trans is in 5th gear) until the chain becomes "twang" tight. No measurement necessary, just turn and feel.

Once the chain becomes tight I loosened the tensioner a little bit and rotated the wheel again. The amount of chain that is tight becomes smaller and smaller as the tensioner is loosened. When its just a couple of links that are tight mark them and then adjust the chain to the 3/4 inch spec. and tighten the lock nut.

Rotate your wheel all the way around until the marked links come up again and check your measurements. They should be right on 3/4 inch. Replace the inspection cover and you are done.

I only used this method once but it worked fine. I found it quick and a lot less frustrating than "move and measure and move again and measure again". All I had to do was feel if the chain was tight or loose.
