why doesn`t anyone,anywhere make a spray paint that approaches molten orange in color? Ever been to the paint section of a store like WalMart or HomeDepot or Menards or Lowes or SherwinWilliams? Color matching is a finicky game and nearly impossible to get exactly right. The chances of someone making a spray paint to match a limited production run motorcycle is remote. Best you can do is to get an air brush, some touch up paint, or color match some automotive paint and do your best. Your best chance of getting a spray paint even close would be to go to some big hobby store which has an active customer base and hope they have something close in stock or that can be ordered. Here where I am there is a Hobby type store not too far away, but if I really want a good paint selection I'll head about 25 miles south to a little store known as Greenfield News & Hobby which has a much broader selection than the more local National Franchisee store. I know you've got some big hobby stores out in your region, I'd wager that one of them will have something close. A quick google search found a model train store in Redwood City and some hobby shops in Woodside and San Carlos. I'd suggest starting at the model train store, some of those scale model train hobbyists are fanatical in matching colors clear down to getting an exact tonal match of mud splatters on box car wheels. | ||

Actually Mike, I'm not in the paint side of the automotive industry but my understanding is that there are hand held spectrophotometers that paint professionals use to identify paint colours as accurately as possible. Color Quality of Automotive Finishes Goes High Tech Getting the result into a rattle can might be another issue though, lol. Rocket | ||

This will be of no help at all . . .but did it occur to anyone else the our ol' buddy kxkidd(?) may have been prophetic with when describing his M2's color as "hard to find Molten Orange" My experience echoes that of Sir Rocket and several others . . .with deep enough pockets you can get a very close match custom mixed. Small amounts in a can suitable for a detail sprayer should be fairly easy to get from an automotive paint supplier . . .even easier if you give them the paint codes to work with. YMMV, and always consider the source. | ||

I have had automotive paint stores fill spray cans for me in the past. Some high quality spray can nozzles (sherwin williams)put out a fine pattern that rivals a gun. I don't recommend standard spray paint, even if it is a perfect match. Spray can paint is soft and will never, ever give you the kind of results that you need on a bike. However, when a shop loads their paint into a can, it's just as good as a gun job. | ||

I went to my local harley dealer and ordered EXACT MATCHING touch up paint for $15 EDIT: the paint is actually a 3 stage kit, including the base coat, the top coat, and the clear coat. I got some Duplicolor high temp engine spray paint from Oreilly's that matches VERY closely. It's got just a touch more orange/less red than the Buell molten orange but barely noticeable. DE 1620 Chevrolet Orange |
