I went to start my '03 9R. No problem, except the headlights won't come on. The high-beam indicator is lit on the dash, no matter what position the headlight switch is in. I turned the ignition off, and the bike wouldn't stop running. I finally used the kill switch, then restarted the bike. Again, no lights, but it shut off normally when I turned off the ignition. Is this more than a blown fuse? A few times before, I've heard a brief electric crackling sound when I started the bike, but that only happened occasionally.
If it matters, I rode the bike in the rain yesterday. I'm stuck here at work in the dark now.

Definitely not just a blown fuse, that has to be a short somewhere. You didn't get a diode turned around did you?

I wouldn't know if I turned a diode around or not. How can I tell?
I rode the bike around my parking lot. It runs fine, all the blinkers and brake light works. Just the darn headlights are out.

They are in the fuse box, look like big black fuses, and have an arrow pointing one direction. If you line up the printed fuse box cover picture correctly so that the fuse map matches, the arrow on that picture should match the arrow on the diode.

Is it still not shutting down when you turn off the ignition?

No, it shuts down now. It only happened once. I replaced the headlight fuse, to no effect.

Hmmm. Did you check the fuses since the "won't shut down" incident?

I am suspecting an intermittent short, that caused the "won't shut down" and blew the headlight fuse, but is not not shorting (for the moment), but the fuse is still blown. Did you check the fuses?

It's also possible both headlights are blown. Maybe from a voltage spike (failing voltage regulator and a marginal battery connection).

So check the headlight fuse and the headlight bulbs... I don't know that you will find anything, but the checks are easy enough.

Well, it's at the local Harley shop now. They suspect a relay problem. The lights came on as I rode it to the shop, but when I got there, they quit again.
I have to rely on the dealer. I'm simply not a mechanic. That's one reason why I got an XB - low maintenance.
Thanks to all of you for your ideas and insights.
