I was trying to do some searches about stuff that i have read here on BadWeb. I have a 99 S3T with apx 25k on the engine. I am not experiencing any issues but I was just wondering when this should be replaced.

Can someone point me in the right direction for more information?

Thanks in advance for you input.

if it's the original -- replace it now

the only way to check, sadly, is to drop the primary cover

if it breaks, it could lock up the primary drive with the pieces -- bad smoke!

Perform search from the main page for "tensioner replace" -- refine to just the Knowledge Vault and you'll get a lot of hits.

Here is just one http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=3842&post=70659#POST70659

I just replaced the chain tensioner on my 99 M2 with 12,200 miles on it. The shoe was fine but the flimsy base plate was starting to bend forward toward the crank side of the case. Good thing I caught it. New tensioner base plate is much more substantial than the older one and is cheap insurance.
