Okay, I am going to try to make this as straight forward as possible. I installed the Buell Race Kit on my 05 XB9R the other day.... Hauled it into the dealer, they reset the TPS and all that, rode it home, thought I heard some popping/backfiring on Decel but couldn't be for sure. Rode it around the next day and I did hear the noise I thought I was hearing. It is popping speratically on decel. No soot at the exhaust tips. The connection between the exhaust and header is good. I took the snorkel out, put the race filter in, didn't chop up my inner air box. Infact, it's still on there. I have a feeling that it's running lean because the noise is on decel, but hell, I just don't know.

If I ride the bike in say 2nd or 3rd or whatever gear to about 4500-5000 and back it off, it's like 4th of July. I have no idea what's going on.

If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Mark

What you describe is not abnormal for race kit performance.

So... The popping/ backfiring is NORMAL and to be expected? It just sounds like I'm running lean, but I suppose that without running it on the DYNO or running the diagnostics myself through buying it through AL, I suppose I will never know.

I would be more interested in knowing WHY that is not abnormal. Wouldn't this end up causing some problems for my spark plugs and oveall engine performance issues? Especially down the road?

I guess I am not seeing this rationally. I am eager to learn, though.

Thank you so far, Blake.

See.............. you're not that mean.

(From an old posting if you remember that)

Backfiring would not be normal, only the popping coming from the tailpipe during deceleration.

It is a race kit so it runs a bit rich and the fumes in the exhaust tract can ignite. It is not a problem, but it certainly is noticeable. A friend of mine, Keith (Skully), went through the exact same situation with his XB9S after installing the race ECM with his D&D muffler and opened airbox.

He is now running a Direct Link setup. Not sure if his XB9 still pops on decel or not.
