I need to reattach a tank cover tab to the tank cover. What method of repair has worked for you? This is a spare cover so it is off of the bike and I have time to do it correctly. Thanks for your help! | ||

I used Gorilla Glue (a polyurethane adhesive) and two washers. My Dad is an engineer at an automotive feeder plant, and he recommended that type of adhesive as what they use to stick together things that are tough to stick together. You know, the "how do you glue the label on the glue bottle" stuff. Basically, I made a sandwich of the washers (top and bottom) gluing them to the tank cover, also gluing the "chunked out" piece of the tank cover in place (substantially supported by the washers on either side). The stuff foams and expands while curing, so keep an eye on it and you may have to do some sanding after the fact to clean it up. So far, so good. I can't remember if that was my spare or if it is the one that is on the bike, but I do remember starting it as a short term fix and being surprised at how well it ended up sticking. | ||

Thanks for the reply. In my case the cover is intact but the mounting tab at the front of the cover has been busted loose. The tab was orginally glued/welded to the cover peice but the bike was in an accident and the mounting tab broke off from the cover during the impact. | ||

FYI - I ended up using a two-part urethane adhesive to repair the tank cover. I used Hardman brand A-85 bubblepack. There was more than enough adhesive for the tab repair and it appears to be attached more firly than the original hot weld. I will report if I have any problems. PS - Our chemical engineer noted that this adhesive would be much better suited than Gorilla Glue or any other one-part adhesive. | ||
