Guys, As an owner of a 2000 X1 for all of a week and also a resident of the UK I'm afraid that I am just starting to feel my way in the land of Buells.No doubt there will be more threads to which I'm party to however just a quick question to start.Is there a quick way to tell the type of rear shock.this is purely having read the recall bits on the 00 model which could be updated to a 01 model.I spent 10 minutes on my stomach with a cloth but can't see a manufacturers stamp so figured it was easier to as you guys across the pond.I should point out that Buell dealerships are still in their infancy here ie HD dealers .Thanks anyway | ||

Can you post a picture of it? If it is the recall, it will be a Showa; the OEM shock was also a Showa. Measure the shock length fully retracted from eye to eye. We'll be able to tell from that if it is pre- or post-recall. Or take a gander at the recall service bulletin... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/bulletins/Sh ockRecall99-00.pdf Pre-recall shock would be closer to 17" from eye to eye. I don't recall the exact length. | ||

FYI - I bought a basket case M2 a couple of months ago. I posted a similar query and armed with the info from the great people here - decided to argue with the Motor Company. Bottom line - I could not find a dealer that would honor the recall. Turns out there is another recall - and if your unit has the eye cover piece - they consider it closed. Hate to be the bearer of possibly bad news - but I suspect you will have to replace the shock out of pocket. | ||

Yes I did. They were nice - but fundamentally told me to take a hike. | ||

Thanks for the help guys.The shock length is around 14 1/2 " on the side stand(haven't got the gear at the moment to jack 'er up and since I'm alone..technically speaking...I did want to chance any balancing acts) however since it extends I assume thats close to it's retracted length.One other question.If I may be so bold.I'm in the unenviable position of having to go away for 5 weeks(work I'm afraid not holiday).Apart from the battery disconnection and some protection on exposed metal etc are there any other tips for this time of year..clutch,brakes etc which may reduce any effects due to standing. | ||
