Just bought my first XB ell first buell, I love this bike has buell always been this great or only the XB's? anyways heres my delema layed it down last week (only 500 miles on it) not too bad but I broke off shifter and cracked primary pretty bad. got a new cover and shifter but can't seem to get the old one off. I don't know if I need to pull the inspection cover off or if it should just come off after unbolting. It will be a major task pulling inspecion covers off because the torx heads are ground down.

Drill their heads off... It won't take long.

You have to disconnect the clutch cable by going in through that derby cover before you can remove the primary cover.

If you just drill off the heads, just enough to remove the derby cover, once you pull the derby cover you will probably have enough shaft left to get them out with needle nose pliars.

Thanks for the help, didn't need to get the rest of the bolt out since I'm replacing the primary cover. everthing went smooth. My gaskets appear to be flawless should I still replace on such a new bike? also should I use some type of silcone on them? what is the best gear oil to use?

They are metal gaskets, right? I have not had to pull the primary cover on my XB, but after switching to the metal gaskets on my tuber, I re-used that primary gasket at least 3 times with no problem. Compare that to the paper ones, where more then one time even a brand new gasket did not hold for more then a week.

I just put them back on dry.

For gear oil, the new Harley Formula+ is probably the least controversial. It will just work. The Harley Syn3 (or any other good 20w50 or 15w50 synthetic) will also work fairly well. On my M2, I got a huge improvement in shifting using Mobil 1 Gear oil, and nothing else worked anywhere near as well. On the XB, Mobil 1 gear oil works a little, but not much, better then the Formula+.

There is some speculation around that Mobil 1 gear oil is leading to premature stator failures. I don't think it is, at least not for the reasons being touted, but for an XB it does not really offer much advantage, so it is probably better just to use the Formula+ or 20w50.

While you have that cover off, you might want to look at the crank nut service bullitin and see if you need to re-torque yours. I think they were on right from the factory, and just the service manual is wrong and was corrected, so I don't think you need to do anything.
