Background Info: I have a 2005 XB12Scg with about 5000 miles on it. It has a Drummer SS and the Race ECM.

In August I started blowing headlight bulbs, 2 sets to be exact. I consulted my manual and ran a voltage regulator test. Turns out I had a bad VR. I bought one from Daves and put it in. When I tried to start the bike and I barely got anything from the starter. I guess riding the bike with 17 plus volts didn't do the battery any good. So I ordered one of those from Daves and once I put it in, the bike ran awesome!

The next day I sprained my ankle, so I haven't ridden the bike for almost a month. On Saturday I went to ride it and I notice that the headlights are dead again. ARGHHHH

I can't find the service manual, so I just hooked a volt meter to the battery while it was idling and I was getting about 12.7 volts. When I revved it up to 2500 I was up to 16+ volts. What the heck!!! I only have about 5 miles on the bike since I replaced the voltage regulator and battery!

It seems like the VR is dead again! Any suggestions on what and where to look? What could be causing this.

Help!

Its a shunt regulator, meaning that if it is not hooked up you would be seeing the over voltage like that.

Check your connections and connectors and wiring...

Thanks Reep!

That might explain why a brand new regulator seems bad after less then 5 miles... I bet it is a frayed wire, broken connection, or a bad connector.

I'll check that out. It'll probably wait until spring though.

Somebody was talking about bending something at some connector as well. Can't remember which, but there are not many connectors to check associated with the stator and voltage regulator, its a nice simple system.

Hi everyone. I have this exact same problem it seems... I have a voltage regulator from an XB installed on my S3T.. my voltage regulator part # is y0302-02a8 or I've seen it as y0302.02a8 . I also have what I presume to be an XB stator in this bike.

The voltage regulator is outputting way too much voltage when the engine is reved up.

I've checked for bad connections ad found none.... Reepicheep ... what needs to be connected in your opinion? Does the VR it's self need to be grounded? I've grounded the VR to no effect. Does the manual for the XB specifically say that the VR needs to be grounded? The manual for the S3T says the VR needs to be grounded, but it is talking about the s3T VR, not the XB VR.

I've ordered a used XB VR and I will hook it up and see if it has the same problem.

Thanks for any info or ideas anyone might have!

Thats interesting to put an XB stator and voltage regulator in a tuber. No reason it would not work, I suppose, provided the cables reach.

Measure ohms between each of the three pins (you will have three if it's an XB stator, two pins for a tuber stator). Measure between all the pins (three measurements). The manual says what they are supposed to be, I think it's 6 ohms or something. I can look unless somebody posts here from memory.

Then measure each pin to a good ground. It should be infinity.

Finally, start the bike and measure the AC voltage across each pair of pins. I think it's like 60 volts at 3000 rpm or something, again I can check, and it's in the archives somewhere.

On my tuber, I think the VR was grounded by it's mounting bolts and bracket to the frame.

I apologize in advance for the thread-jack. I'd be happy with answers off-line.

Rob; can you please elaborate on your XB stator on your tuber set-up?

I was recently trying to do the same on my S2, but were missing a few bits of information. I'm in particular interested in how you dealt with the engine sprocket - since the tuber and XB sprockets are different.

I realized you can buy the sprocket/stator assembly and you can buy one of the parts individually, but not the other. What did you end up doing?

Henrik

Not off topic at all.. I guess there *is* a reason it would not work, which Henrik pointed out, complete with a fix.

And to further jack the jacked thread... Henrik, get the HID.
