your thoughts please:

I've got all winter to poke away at this!!
I have a new Race ECM to put in my '03 9r (to add to the K&N filter and SpecOPS pipe installed last winter).
I know I'll need a TPS reset.
I know that the bike may or may not run with the Race ECM installed prior to having the TPS reset.
The bike is stored for the cold Canadian winter in my buddy's nice warm heated workshop.
I hear suggestions to swap ECM's in the dealership parking lot, then have them do the TPS reset....fair enuf.
I'm not trying to totally avoid paying anyone to install the ECM, but I figure I can install it myself while in storage - gives me an opportunity to spend some quality time with it over the winter...).
So here's the question:
Given the effect of the ECM running in open vs closed loop (ie it "learns" and adjusts things while in "closed loop" - above 3500 rpms, right?) and assuming it runs at all pre-TPS reset, is there a difference in the risk of other problems being created if the bike was ridden the 20 miles or so to the dealership in the spring while keeping the revs below 3500 to avoid the newly installed race ECM 'changing' anything/causing damage?

You don't need to worry about the AFV acquisition during that 20 miles, that won't be the big deal. The big deal is whether the bike starts or runs at all, which is a total crapshoot. If the bike runs well enough to drive, but isn't perfect, I wouldn't worry so much about it's AFV being learned a little bit wrong due to that, it'll fix itself in 5 freeway miles after you have the TPS reset.

hi Al - thanks for the response! ok - that reassures me very much...I can live with the "big risk' being simply whether the bike will run or not....if it ends up not running, I'll simply throw the stock ecm back in to get it to the dealer.
cool! a little "winter project" to pass the long months!!
