I noticed this today when I was around town with the XB12R, 2 up with a friend. When the engine reached 2000 rpm there was this noise that metal is rubbing against each other, like when there are rusty parts. Like an old door closing, or an old bed making this kricking noise when ..... you know. Also when the rear suspension was working 2 up there was this noise. Then I tried riding only myself, the noise disappeared. Again checked 2 up and the noise came back. Is this normal when the bike is loaded 2 up with with about 410 lbs (185kg) ? I was thinking, since the swing-arm is mounted directly to the engine and the engine vibrates on the frame, when there is extra load to the swing-arm the position of the engine on the frame changes slightly and there is some metal rubbing as the engine vibrates. Or maybe from the rear shock bearings ? But I also wonder that when the engine was re-mounted on the frame, after the engine was replaced under warranty, the mechanic missed something or something got loose. Any ideas what should I do and what to check? | ||

And the problem was : The idle screw was stuck between the engine and the air scoop. So when 2 up, the swing-arm was pushed more by the extra weight, changing the position of the engine on the mounts and making the idle screw rubbing itself against the vibrating engine, producing the sound. | ||

Thanks for the post. I don't have the problem on my XB12R (but I won't take a passenger). I do have a weird rattle in first gear above 4K RPM. No other gear gives the same rattle. I just finished putting some lube on the shift mechanism and assuming no snow - will ride the M2 tomorrow to work and see if that was it. |
