So I've buggered up the threads for preload adjustment on my shock. The lock nut had backed all the way off and I sat there fiddling with it for 20 minutes trying to get the threads to engage. This was at a track day and I had to get the bike through inspection. Couldn't get the damn thing to engage, so rather than miss any track time I cross threaded the thing and tightened it down with my biggest wrench. So now the question is - does anyone think these threads can be repaired, or am I looking for a replacement shock?

Kurt

Kurt,
I'm pretty new to buells and compared to some of the other guys here I know bugger all about the shocks. However threads are more me.Check if the threads look knackered on the nut or the male portion.Since you've adjusted the preload Sounds like the nut that's knackered Assuming you can back off the nut and it looks passable Get either set of needle files or special thread chaser which will have usually eight different types of thread(given in Threads per inch (TPI))You can use these to dress the male if thats the problem although I would imagine that you may have problems if you wind the adjustment further up the thread at a later date as it may then be engaging a weaker part of the thread(the locknut doesn't take the full load). The locknut would be more problematic as I would assume you'd have to strip the shock at which point you may be easier to consider changing it out.Bearing that in mind If there is any doubt change it as since you are a racing man what you don't want is the whole thing to give way mid corner.I shall defer any more to the experts
