I recently bought a 2000 M2. Was a basket case.I have it together and running fantastic. I rejetted the carbs (165/45), added a k&n air filter and a Vance and Hines exhaust. Since this is my project bike, I am looking at more performance enhancements. So-what does the board recommend? Hotter cams? I think it has the Thundstorm heads on it-I believe they are stock on the 2000. Any other suggestions? While Money is always an object, I am looking at doing stuff incrementally. Thanks!

A 165 is probably too small for the main jet! They come stock with a 190.

What kind of hotter performance are you looking for? More low-end and mid-range, or max peak HP or a good all around performance upgrade?

A performance top-end including cylinder head and valve work along with cams can get you an amazing increase in performance. Check out all the dyno charts for examples of what is possible.

Then there is the 1250cc upgrade kit option, good for another 4% across the board.

Then again, I know of an S3 that makes over 110 RWHP with the stock displacement and stock pistons and has accrued some serious mileage.

Upgrading to a performance carburetor like the Mikuni HSR-42 is also very beneficial when performance climbs upwards of 90 RWHP or so.

It had 200/42s in it. The dealer recommended the 165/45 (actually, called it their jet kit).

As for what I am looking for - I think I want a basic hooligan machine. Something that I can snap a wheelie in first or second. It won't be a long distance bike for me - it will do some duty as a commuter - but mostly just something to show off with. It is the 5th bike in my stable - and the first one I want to actually modify myself.

My suggestion would be to go for the 1250 kit (~$750) with Mikuni HSR-42 (~$300), some good head porting/shaping (~$600?) with pistons to match (included in 1250 kit), the SE cams (~$300?), a performance ignition module, and some expert dyno tuning. Your best bet is to talk to and coordinate with the industry's top experts, folks who have been doing this for decades. Give the folks at Cycle Rama and/or Revolution Performance a call; they won't steer you wrong and are always willing to help you configure and plan for your Buell performance upgrades.
