The Tail light is on but the brake light isn't working. If it is the bulb, wouldn't it just fail completely leaving me no tail light? Would replacing the bulb solve this?

that happened on my M2. it was the rear brake light switch. not to sure where they are on the xb. it was an easy job on the M2, and not too expensive.

the taillight bulb on the xb9r is a standard 1157 dual element bulb, you just need a new bulb. Pull it and look at it, you'll see the blown element.

Yep, that was it. I replaced it yesterday after taking it out and looking at it. The bottom element was still in tact, but the top brake light element was broken.

Thanks for the help guys.

...ok....but here's a good one: also on an xb9r (an '03) guys following me generally tell me that my tail light is intermittent. the brake light is fine, but the tail light kicks off every once in a while. Dealer had a quick look, couldn't really see anything wrong with the bulb..haven't really pushed the issue...I guess maybe it's something in the wiring?
anyone else have the same issue and/or manage to fix it?

thanks

Yes my tail light would work but my brake light didn't unless I physically pushed down on the bulb.
Take the connector apart and bend the copper fittings OUT a little bit.
Snugs the contacts right up.

buelltroll: aha!! since posting my question I came across another post about an intermittent light where the suggestion was to make sure the actual socket contacts were making good contact with the bulb contacts....hopefully this will solve the issue!!

ya, I envy you folks who live in "warmer" climates....
normally the fall up here is decent, but someone here noted the other day that we've had 50 some days of rain in the last 70 some days up here, and it's been damn cold too!!
winter weather came way too early this year. oh well, maybe spring is just around the corner then...??

I find using a little electrical contact putty helps a bunch. I live in Seattle area - and using the putty helps chase down some of those weird intermitant electrical bulb issues.
