This is a repost of my post in Big Bad and Dirty...

First off, I love my Uly. It's the second Buell I have owned. I've had absolutely 0 problems with my other Buell, an '04 XB12R.

With that being said, I bought my '06 Uly about a month and a half ago. At 48 (yes 48) miles, it started running rough (idle between 1200-1300, sluggish throttle response, check engine light came on.) I continued to ride the bike that weekend (the dealership was closed.) I brought the bike in after the weekend, they looked at it, adjusted the TPS (which they attempted to charge me for) and sent me on my way. The bike was running fine for a while (about 1000 miles) and it started doing the exact same thing. I brought it back but this time they rode it 10 miles, couldn't find anything wrong with it, and sent me on my way. I just got back from 500 miles this weekend and it is still doing the same thing. The tech I talked to said "Buells are fickle." They have one more chance to fix it before it is a lemon under NC law.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have put a lot of extras into this bike already and don't want to have to start over with a new bike.

I'll be happy to get more specific for anyone who has some technical expertise.

Rules of Buell:
The first rule is: Only buy bikes from Dave in Appleton. The second rule is: NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES let ANYBODY work on the bike. Even if you are blind and only have one hand with 2 fingers and no thumb, you can do a better job than the "Technicians" fixing your own bike.

Seriously Now Call Buell Customer Service. (414-343-8400)
Ask them to help you arrange an appointment at the next closest Buell Dealer and some kind of courtesy transportation.

Good Luck

Nick

PS - if the check engine light came on, it could be as simple as a ground fault or short on one of the DDFI sensors... They should have been able to pull a stored code with the Scanalyzer and at least get a clue as to the problem.

You need to have a REAL Buell tech look at your bike. It sounds like the tech in that shop does not like the brand
and just tries to shove them out the door as fast as possible.

Be polite and respectful when talking to the dealer, but you DO need to get Buell Customer Service involved.

Toxic - I posted on the other board. Call Lee at Shelton's about your problems. They can get it right. Give Shelton's a shot if you want to keep the bike.

Diablo, that's what you would think, but that tech also owns an '05 Lightning, so I'm not convinced that that is the case. I posted on the other board that they are sending a truck down to pick it up and the service manager is getting "personally involved." I'm also going to give a call up to Buell customer service and see if they can't offer any support. Thanks for the inputs here, I'll keep you all updated.

Asked for Alan, got the response "our Techs only talk to dealer Techs" I did however get a case number assigned to it, so that's good right?

Pardon my ignorance but what other board are you talking about? Is there another Buell site that is as active as this one? Thanks

Toxic, I hope you get your problem sorted out because the Buell XB IMHO is a work of art.

Cad, couldn't agree more, I love both of my XB's, just not getting love from the Uly right now.

The "other board" is just another subset of badweb...it's the big bad and dirty section.

Just because someone owns a bike it does not mean they know to, or have been trained to, work on them effectively.

I still think you need to have a different tech take a look at your bike.

That's an excellent thing, you did precisely the right thing to get this resolved quickly. If you get a chance, drop me a note.

Update

I picked it up on Saturday. They replaced the engine temperature sensor; they think that was the problem all along. For whatever reason, when it messed up previously, it didn’t set a maintenance code…sounds odd. If it messes up again, I’ll take it to Shelton’s for its last chance. After that, I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Halloween update:

So it's been 300 miles since they replaced the ETS. It had been running more smoothly (although it still is not as strong as my 04 Firebolt) until yesterday when the check engine light came on and did not go out. I called the General Manager of the dealership and he wanted his one last chance to fix it. While talking, HE was the one that brought up the lemon law info and seems very motivated to keep me as a customer, telling me that if this last repair fails and the MoCo won't accept a lemon settlement, he would do everything he can to rectify the situation. He even suggested a swap for an '07 Uly on the floor at the dealership.

It's gotta be frustrating for you. It sounds like you now have good dealer support and are on the verge of resolution.

Hang in there, it will all work out.
