hi all i have xb9r done 15,000kms 2002 white/red i purchased this 2nd hand rode it home then went for a ride with a mate had done only 200 ks when i felt something let go in the gearbox can get 1st and 2nd but nothing else also there is a nice rumbling sound from the tranny also
i did my home work i asked all the questions but now have a bike that is now not worth bugger all.
has any one heard of these doing this and i believe there you have to split cases to get to tranny.
love the ride love the style love the bike but am a little pissed at a f*****ed tranny.
Does mr buell know because this bike cost me $9000.00 and estimate to fix as there is a another down here in NZ done the same thing cost $4500.00 to fix

The transmission on the XB's was a cartridge type until 2006. You have an access door inside your primary which unbolts and allows you to slide the whole bit out.

Transmission failures are not common, but shifter pawl problems are a little more frequent.

My guess is that if the shop you spoke to is telling you that they will have to split the cases to get at the transmission then you should take it to another shop because it is very difficult to make an effective repair with your head up your arse.

If you are reasonable with tools you can open her up to take a look. I'm willing to bet $100US that you have a shifting mechanism problem, not a tranny problem.

Oops! Looked up your own nether regions lately? As FMJ mentions below, the XBs from day one have required splitting the cases to access the transmission. Thanks though for trying to offer some thoughtful advice. : )

We don't hear of many tranny failures here on the BW.

One can never know what the service history was on this bike. It may have never had the trans oil changed.

Good luck with the repair.

My XB has 13K miles on it and shifts great.

XB's from the first do not have trapdoor like the tubers, cases must be split to access trans.
What was the diagnoses from the shop. The XB's are not known to have transmission problems.

Sorry Dwundabkr, my 03 9R had very similar problems. And as stated, according to my service manual, yes, you have to split the cases. Mine was exactly doing what you are stating, then we continued to try to shift where it didn't want to go, and now it works in 1-4th.

There is a horrible knock/rattle at idle, especially on the kickstand. Fairly certain it is 5th gear sitting in the bottom of the tranny.

Upright, no knock or rattle of any kind, and it feels just great. So, for now I use it 1-4. And I have to watch not paying attention, because shifts into no-gear 5th result in the tranny hating to shift past 2nd again.

I know I should just park it, but I figure the tranny is toast no matter what, so who cares? The entire engine on eBay isn't any worse or better, and mechanically much easier to replace whole than the teardown and rebuild.
