Can anyone provide a little guidance for installation of footpegs on the XBs? I understand how the install is supposed to work, but inevitably what happens is that the tension on the spring get it to sit at an angle, so while it might be aligned at the top of the peg, it's not aligned at the bottom. When the pin goes through the spring, it gradually straightens it out until it gets to the last coil, at which point the pin gets stuck. I've tried prying the coil out of the way with a screwdriver, but it simply slips out of position and blocks the pin. I've tried "coaxing" the coil into alignment by whacking the pin with a hammer, but that simply raises burrs on the pin, which causes it to hang up at the peg hole. I know this isn't rocket science, but it's been EXTREMELY frustrating every time I've had to do it, and I'm guessing there must be a better way. Does this require two people? Some special procedure or tool? Any advice is appreciated. I'm off to polish the burrs off a footpeg pin....  (Message edited by smcnamara on August 11, 2006) | ||

I use a phillips screwdriver. With the blunt "point", it seems to be able to push the spring out of the way just enough without getting hung up. I also use the plastic handle end of a screwdriver as a hammer so it doesn't maul anything if I miss. Tank | ||

I got the Traction footpegs last sunday and plan to get them on the Thunderbolt this week-end but unlike Smcnamara I don't even know where to start. (But I had the same wonder about the possible need for a specific tool). 1st what is needed to remove the existing footpegs? 2nd what is needed to replace them (that seems to be the tricky part). For the 1st step I'll practice removing the passenger footpegs if needed but as I commute daily I want to be sure I can perform this entirely with just a screwdriver and a rubber hammer... I just installed the LSL billet pegs on my Ss a couple of weeks ago. 5 minute job with no instructions. I used just a medium flat blade screwdriver. 1. Remove the e-clip from the pin at the bottom of the peg pivot. 2. Pop the pin out towards the top. I pushed it up with the screwdriver with some jiggling of the peg. Catch the spring as you remove the peg, it did't fly away as I did it slowly. 3. Put the spring roughly in place on the new peg and start installing the peg in the mount. 4. Start the pin from the top and use the screwdriver to push the spring in a bit while jiggling the peg while you push the pin in. 5. Re-install the e-clip. | ||

I just spent about 3 hours trying to re-install the footpeg on my Uly. I was having the very same problem that you describe; the spring would pull back, causing the pin to pinch it, making it impossible to get the pin in. After a full series of cuss words, I finally came up with a solution. I fabricated a 'holding pin' out of the non-threaded part of a 7/16" bolt. I made it exactly the height of the peg. I used this pin to hold the spring in place while attaching the peg. With everything in place and lined-up, I easily inserted the actual pin by pushing out the holding pin. Took about 3 seconds. Hope this makes sense. Kinda hard to explain. | ||

I pushed my phillips screwdriver through the peg mount and spring from the bottom and got everything lined up. Then I put the bolt in through the top and as I pulled the screw driver out from the bottom, tapped the bolt in from the top with a small hammer. Piece of cake! Hope this helps. | ||

Just installed the Touratech pegs on the Uly. What a pain in the ass. You might want to do yourself a favor and order replacement pins and springs BEFORE you try the install. The install took me about 3-4 hours of frustration and bloody fingers. I'm pretty patient and sort of handy with tools. This was a real test. The stock pegs go on fine. The after market ones go on hard. You may also want to use blue painter's tape to protect your metal. |
