New to the forum, couple of ?'s Have a '97 s3, outer 5th gear bearings going out( belt squeaks on wobbling pulley). I assume that's a sure sign. Anyway the question is, do I need the entire list of special tool the manual calls for? Or can I make do with out them? H-D sure is proud of them, you'd think they were gold plated. |

The wobbling pulley could be a sign that the splines on the pulley are going south. Here's Reepicheep's 5th gear story: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=3842&post=198002#POST 198002 Henrik |

It could be the splines also, but when I took the front pulley cover off, I noticed that the oil seal on the end of the shaft was missing. So every time I road in the rain or washed it, the needle bearings got soaked. |
