03 XB9R 17k.. all stock. when coming to a stop the idle seems to jump up to about 1300-1400 on it's own. Sometime when I give it throttle from a standstill there is no power at all and sometimes is stalls out completely. I'm truely stumped here and any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem with my '03 XB9R. I took it to the dealership and told them what the problem was. They checked the TPS adjustment and said it was fine. They ran it on the dyno for 22 miles, then on the freeway for another 20. They could not get it to replicate the problem. They said the diagnosis did not reveal any problems. It still runs like crap. If anybody has any other suggestions of what could be the problem...something that wouldn't show up on the dyno, please let me know.

Would leaking intake manifold seals cause this, too?

"It still runs like crap."

Is that the problem or does the idle jump up a bit like described by XB9Army? :/

The idle surges up to about 12-1500 and stays there as was described. If I open the throttle when the idle is surging the engine sputters like its only running on one cylinder. Sometimes it just coughs once and dies.

It's not fair to say that it runs like crap. It starts fine and idles fine at start-up. It's just after driving it for a few minutes there is a noticeable loss of power while driving. And then the after a few minutes of driving when i come to a stop that's when the idle goes haywire.

The loss of power thing however make me think that maybe your fuel tank is not properly venting and is building up a vaccum or more likely that your fuel pump may be suffering a problem.

Does your check engine light come on?

Blake,
That isn't entirely true. When you've backed the throttle all the way to the true zero position by backing the idle adjust stop screw all the way off and gently forcing the throttle closed, you CAN read the throttle position. If it says 0, then it is 0. You can then reset the throttle position in that position, and that will of course make it say 0. But if it was already saying 0, you won't change anything.

I suspect an intake seal leak based on that description. Leanness will increase idle speeds, and startup throws an enrichening circuit at it that may be giving it just enough fuel to not run as bad at that time. And a leak does affect low speed running more than high speed. And both bikes are 03's, which have more time on their seals.

BB/XBarmy, perform the water/WD40 test (spray at the head/manifold junction, see if it affects the engine operation). If yes, fix the seals. If no, it's likely one of the sensors.

Or not. Before you do anything, remember Al's 2 rules of motorcycle mechanics:
1) EVERYTHING is a grounding problem until proven otherwise
2) Whatever is wrong with your bike is likely related to the last thing you worked on.

Thanks for the correction Al. My above mis-statement has been humbly removed. : )

I highly recommend using electrical contact cleaner for diagnosing a possible intake seal leak(s). It evaporates quickly. : )

No the check engine light does not come on. I did notice something strange this morning on my way to work. While sitting waiting to make a turn I noticed my head light and instrument lights were dimming in time to my blinker. I'm now wondering if it might be an electrical problem. I still have the factory installed battery. I'm wondering if a weakened battery might be the culprit. Being that this is the battery the bike rolled off the assembly line with, its' possible it needs replacing.

I did a check on the intake manifold a few times. Both when the motor was hot and cold. It didn't seem to effect RPM's at all. Which sensor do you think may be bad?

Just got my bike back from the dealer. I took it out for a ride and it has the same problem. The dealership replaced spark plugs and wires, then told me it was all fixed. So much for letting the "experts" figure it out. Anyone have any luck yet?

I replaced the battery and it seemed to clear up the problem for a little while. Now it's back to doing the same thing. If I get up hard on the throttle while at speed the bike loses power and stumbles. I guess the next thing to try is looking for an intake leak. I'm open to suggestion here.
