I know this is not a big deal (or a deal at all) too many, but I'm pretty darned jazzed about my first attempt at cutting threads on the 92 year old lathe

roflmao -- nossir, still the lil dear you saw when you came visiting . . . . I keep thinkin I need a slightly larger capacity lathe, slightly newer (similar to two-footitis that boat owners suffer from) . . .

but then I realize that I'm the weak link in the accuracy chain, and I'd like to keep the Dalton til it's 100, ya know?

Knurling....finally a topic I have some knowlegation of.

In fact one of my friends was in the knurling team in college. I used to tease them that tossing that thing across the ice twasn't really a sport.

Nice job, Bomber!

And an internal thread to a shoulder, that's a toughie!

Did you cut from the inside out? Or with the cutting tool mounted upside down?

Is that a stash container? Or maybe a brake fluid reservoir?

Jack

Brad -- ply me with mind altering substances, and I'll tell ya the Q-Tip story ;-}

Jack -- thanks, sir. actually the internal thread goes into a relief at the very end. I shoulda made it a bit longer, but it works! (yippee)

cut from the outside in, with the lathe running in reverse -- made sense a the time, as I made the top first, parted it off, and then made the body --

i didn't want to take the stock outa the three jaw chuck (onliest one I got) as it's inaccurate as the day is long -- I'm gonna reward myself with a new four-jaw soon, beleive me -- of course, now that it's done, I can see a coule of easier ways to do it

and I also gotta get a thread dial -- I won't tell ya how long this thing took me (embarassing!)

I'm finding the actual metal munching to be pretty easy -- it's the setting up that requires all the skull work . . . . .

stach container -- chuckle -- if I HAD a stash, I woulda had to score it from one of my daughter's classmates, and they woulda told on me, I'm sure! (sigh)

rear brake fluid reservoir, as you guessed -- gotta gun-kote it this weekend and get it on the scoot -- the plastic one is light, superbly engineered, well made, you can check the fluid level easily, so of course I made a replacement, right?

;-}

Sounds like you're getting the hang of it Bomber. I did those kind of threads occasionally. But I was lucky, I had a threading dial. Sometimes I would set up a magnetic base dial indicator so that I could stop the cut on the money each time. With a 1" travel indicator you could watch the numbers count down and disengage the feed.

Man, I sure miss having a lathe...

if you've room, there is a glut of old Atlas (sears) and other lil arn on the market these days, for who knows what reason

Bomber,

I need to have a moment of truth with myself soon. I have an Atlas 12" in storage that is starting to deteriorate. I need to either rescue that or get rid of it, I have just not gotten around to it.

Bluz,

I'll keep you in mind. Mine is well accessorized and was working fine when it went into storage. It was the backbone of my gunsmithing business for about 15 years.

There are better lathes around but if you know your machine and can get the work done, that is all that matters.
