Ignore this post, it is wrong! No, they are the fine thread, 5/16-24. And that is on both stud and nut ends if I remember right. But the thread on the end in the cylinder head is 5/16-24. Jack (Message edited by jackbequick on August 05, 2006) | ||

Parts book shows 5/16-18 flange nut for the exhaust header. Just wondering if anything changed. It does'nt give the stud size in the book, just the P?N 16715-83. | ||

These are the same studs H-D has been using for a long time now. 5/16"-18 threads into the head, 5/16"-24 for exhaust flange nuts. Hope this helps. Chris | ||

Odinbueller: Thanks. The parts book says the nut is 5/16-18 and it's definetly wrong. The way I found this out, I lost a nut. It just vibrated loose I guess and I went and got a 5/16-18 nut. It did'nt feel right when I went to tighten it up. Finally got a thread gauge and checked. Whew!!! Almost blew it there.  | ||

What are the odds!!!! The rear header nuts fell off!!!! Took it for a test ride and the rears just backed themselves off. Studs are OK thank goodness. The only original nut is the left front. Looks like it's time for some lock washers! I never thought I'd have this problem. Anybody else had this going on???? Bike has 25000+ miles on it and no real problems before this. | ||

Just to add to this, I sprayed all the nuts with penetrating oil in case I had to remove the header to get to a broken stud. The header nuts were never touched by a wrench by me. They just unscrewed themselves. I'm waiting for the remaining front one to go, but so far it's tight. Go figure!  | ||

Those header nuts have been a vexing item on the tubers for a long time. This may be old news to you, in that case I apologize, but careful mounting and assembly is key. And if you don't have the new Y-mount up front, then you should get it. When mounting up the system you need to get everything into place, all loosely bolted up and then with some wiggling (of the system that is  ), gradually tighten from the heads and down. Tighten a little at a time working your way down the system. Go back up to the heads and continue to readjust and tighten and make sure the entire system is bolted into place without any pressure or binding. Unfortunately the header nuts coming loose and falling may be a symptom of alignment issues. Others have mentioned re-torquing the header nuts after a couple of heat cycles. Finally, I don't know if you have the header tie bar that the earlier tubers had. If you don't, it seems to work well for keeping the system in place. Henrik | ||

On the header nuts that won't stay tight, you might try double nutting them. The deal with them needing frequent retightening is that it leads to overtightening is that it invites the broken stud disaster. I've had a couple of bikes where locking a second nut down on top of the properly tightened first nut (maybe with a split lock washer in between them) kept it from loosening itself. Jack | ||

Going to try lock washers. I can have the nuts faced down at work so they won't be so thick with the lock washers on there. Hope that cures it. | ||

If the loose nuts are indeed a symptom of a mounting or alignment issue, securing the nuts will only make the problem show up elsewhere ... trust me. I fractured a header pipe 1000 miles from home = no fun. Just a thought. Henrik | ||

You can purchase "Jam Nuts" at any decent hardware store. They are about one third the thickness of the standard nut. I just apply a little red loctite to the face of the nut and snug them up. Have yet to have one loosen up. | ||

I've had a D&D can and a Buell branded Super Trap on and off the bike for 2 years. Currently have a D&D can back on. The bike has the "Y" mount from the factory. The mufflers were mounted according to the instructions. So far the new nuts are holding in place. I'm going to keep a close eye on them. |
