A couple weeks ago my bike acted as if the battery was going bad....Just a bunch of fast clicks when trying to start it...Of course I was on the road when it happened...It finally started with the clutch pulled in and the bike in neutral..I checked all the battery leads and ended up replacing the battery to be safe...It is still doing the same thing...it will only start with the clutch engaged...It sounds like a dead battery when trying to start it without the clutch, but it works fine with the clutch pulled in?....I adjusted the clutch (thought maybe it was draggin' a bit), and the primary chain as well.. nothing seems to help...Could it possibly be the side stand switch or the neutral switch?

When mine was sounding like that it was the voltage regulator going out AND the starter goin out.
It didn't do the clutch engaged thing tho so could be something totally different.

Well I guess it was the side stand switch....I cut and pigtailed the wires and all is good with the world again....

Side stand switch? That's interesting. My '03 XB9S just began doing the same thing -- not starting in neutral, but starting with the clutch squeezed -- AND the neutral light seems to be fading. I suspect the starter is dying as well, and the starter is apparently leaking from the bolts securing it to its mount. Haven't checked the stand yet, but will soon. Anyone else run across a similar starting / clutch issue?

Sportfit, your problem could be 1) a failing neutral switch or 2) an intermittent connection or break in the wire from the neutral switch. An intermittent condition could cause a varying high resistance which would result in the light fading.

If it starts fine with the clutch lever pulled in but doesn't while in neutral, see this post for more starter interlock info.

Note: the sidestand switch only affects ignition function not starter function. In other words, the starter may crank but the engine won't run with a bad sidestand switch.

When you say, "I suspect the starter is dying as well", what does it do?
