Hi

I have been struggling to get VDST to work with my XB12X for about a month. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I installed software and tried to connect to stock ecm with no luck tried with race ecm no luck. Occasionally get an error message that says "vehicle interface cable not for this ecu/ecm! Please select ecu ecm command". I'm certain I have the correct serial port selected because when I select ecu command it says ecu configured VDO-EFI and when I select Vehicle interface cable specifications the cable can be read as ECU/ECM Supported ~ VDO-EFI \ Software ~ Standard \ Scm Firmware Version# ~ 2.4 \ Platform ~ PC. Also I have tried 4 different computers, XP Pro, XP Home, and Win98. I called Technoresearch support and he was convinced it was a bad cable so I shipped it to him. He got it hooked it up to an 05 ecm on the bench and said it worked fine and that I probably had 2 bad ecm's so I shipped the new race ecm to him. Got a call back saying the ecm was bad so he shipped the same cable back to me and the ecm to the dealer I purchased it from and they sent me a new ecm. Well guess what the new one doesn't work either same thing, wont connect. Three bad ecm's? Doubt it. Other things I've checked, serial data wiring from diagnostics plug to ecm ok, power and ground on diagnostics plug ok and wired correctly, monitored data going to ecm on pin 11 with oscilloscope data is present with a 5 volt swing, monitored data from ecm pin 12 none present and stays high 5 volt. I have already been told the key switch has to be on and engine kill switch has to be in run position and the fuel pump should run. This is the way I have it set up. One more thing the bike runs great with the stock ecm. I realize the above description is lengthy and appreciate it if you've stayed with me this long. So If someone with VDST has any ideas please chime in. Did I already say please help?

Thanks
Mark

Mark,
What version of the software are you using?
I have had problems with the latest software.
Are you using any USB adapters?

Hi Brewtus

Thanks for asking. I downloaded 2.79I but as you said in your other post it shows as 2.79H under help \ about. What kind of problem are you having with it? I am using the serial port no usb adapter. Any other ideas? I'm all ears.

Please try this. Get everything setup and have the key and kill switch in the on/run position. When it tells you there is a communication error then turn the key off and then right back to the run position. I will bet it connects in a matter of 5-10 seconds. I had the same issue and from the way I read the directions I thought that the software would connect when I clicked the "Connect" button but that is not the way it works.

Hope this helps,
Bart

Thanks Bart
I'll try that again later but don't think it's going to help. Already turned the key switch so much I'm afraid its going to wear out, well not that much. The software would lead you to believe it was trying to continually connect. Going to go try it again right now.

Mramsey,
Now that I downloaded the 2.79I version I am having trouble staying connected to the bike. It keeps disconnecting and re connecting by itself.
The way I have been connecting is opening up VDSTS, going to strip chart, hit the connect button, then I turn on the key and run/ kill switch. It would connect in about ten seconds.
I am going to re-install my old version for now and see what happens.

Good luck Robert
I have never had it connect at all. Have you ever got this error message? "vehicle interface cable not for this ecu/ecm! Please select ecu ecm command". Sounds like its telling me its the wrong cable but the guy at Technoresearch says it's ok. I'll call him back tomorrow.

Mramsey,
Do you want to try my cable? It is an older one that only works on a laptop, but I will ship it to you so you can confirm.
PM me with your shipping info and I will ship it tomorrow.

Dang Robert
That is a gracious offer and very tempting. Let me see what I can come up with here first.
Thanks
Mark

ALERT!!!!

If you are having problems with connecting and disconnecting, AND you are using a Keyspan adapter, first try this:
Go to: All programs then Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. Run the Keyspan Serial Assistant.
Under Port Mapping set the Transmit Completion Timing Advance to Faster & Receive FIFO Buffer Size to 63.

If you are using a native serial port, or you have the keyspan adapter and you've done the above and you are still getting intermittent connectivity, you likely have a bad cable. If you bought it from me, contact me and we'll arrange an exchange. If you didn't buy it from me, contact Technoresearch or your retailer.

I just tested all 14 of the VDSTS kits we had in stock, and one cable exhibited intermittent connectivity issues. The others all worked fine. The one that was bad would connect and disconnect randomly.

You also should review the information contained in the document/thread here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/171527.html#POST686112

Thanks to all that helped me with my connection problem. Especially Al at American Sport Bike and John at Technoresearch. After trying 3 different ecm's and as many cables I now have it working on both stock and race ecm. Turns out I have 3 nice computers that VDST will not work on no matter what the com port and or fifo buffers are set to and one old junky computer that works great every time!

I have found out through experimentation that Windows fifo buffer setting don't take affect until the computer is rebooted. I had been changing these settings on my laptops without ever a reboot. Turns out some of the computers require different com port fifo buffer settings for VDSTS to work. If you are having connection problems try different settings under Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / Communication Port (COM?) / Port Settings / Advanced. Just always remember to reboot between settings for them to take affect. I now am able to get my cable to work on all computers but only after adjusting the fifo settings.
