Fellas,
Got a question for you. Monday I took my bike to a local gathering and I noticed my speedometer was bouncing all over at idle and bouncing and inaccurate at speed. At startup all the guages swept and appear to be operating. Upon reviewing the service manual I checked out all the components associated with the speedometer and found this...

It appears my front sprocket is leaking at the connection to the drive shaft. Everything under the sprocket cover was pretty oily and I cleaned it up. Do you guys think this is correlated?

At first, I thought this oily mess was affecting one of the connectors. According to the manual, one of these wires near this is speedometer related. My second guess is the speed sensor inside the transmission is going out or dirty.

Oddly enough...I rode the bike today and the speedometer was functioning fine. Hmmmm....

Your XB speedo is a stepper motor gage. I'd pull the speedo sensor and make sure that the end hasn't collected a bunch
of fuzz. It's a magnetic pickup and that can interfere with it. Oil shouldn't affect it in those quantities at all.

Update.....

The oily mess under my sprocket cover was due to the neutral switch (sensor?) coming out of its housing. The dealer replaced the seal around this to solve the problem.
