Hi,

I am new to the forums and recently a new owner of a XB12Scg. I purchased a race kit with the ECM, Exhaust and Air Filter this week.

My question, and concern, is related to the TPS (Throttle Reset) that is needed when I am through installing. Will the bike run good enough to get me to a dealer to reset the Throttle? I'd prefer not to buy the software etc needed to do this myself and have NO clue what to expect when I install these 3 mods.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

I once ran an X1 around the hood without tps reset. I didn't want to ride it much longer...

It'll start and all, but the midrange will be like snap crackle pop, not pretty. Then again maybe I was lucky that it actually started.

Its a crapshoot. The TPS sensor is a pot that mounts to the end of the throttle plate shaft in the throttle body. The ECM senses the voltage from that pot, and the TPS is reset by shutting the throttle plate to 100% closed and commanding the ECM to read the voltage then, and that is stored as the zero degree voltage. All other throttle angles are measured as an offset voltage from the zero degree voltage.

The pot is "keyed" to the end of the shaft, so the voltage from the pot will always be in the same neighborhood at any given throttle angle from bike to bike. But "in the neighborhood" isn't good enough for zero, it needs to be spot on. If it is off by a mere 1/2 degree, or even less, the bike won't run right, especially at low throttle angles. Sometimes it won't even start.

0.5 degrees isn't a huge difference at 85 degrees (WOT), but 0.5 degrees out of 6 degrees (idle) is a big difference.

Yeah, the TPS setting is pretty much randomly entered into race ECMs, so you may get one that matches your current TPS exactly, or not at all. If the dealer is close by, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But if you have serious running issues and a lengthy haul to the dealer, find a buddy with a pick-up.

We charge 1/2 hour of labor + shop supplies & tax to reset TPS & set hot idle, but each shop is different.
