I need a crankshaft for a 2001 x1, and I've been doing a little research and I've found that that I want a splined pinion shaft and gear.that is where I had my problems at.dose this sound correct?what other models are interchangeable with my year?(buell or sportster) is this a common problem?and who knows where I can get this kind of crank at?

Not sure about the splines but would try S&S for aftermarket crank. S&S is the major aftermarket supplier for H/D type motors and parts. Their cranks are the best that I am aware of.

S&S crank uses splined pinion, need to source a pinion gear from an early Sportster for the splined one.

Or get the gear with the crank from S&S.

Physically, yes, but the question is a little ambiguous depending on application \ use \ intended purpose.

A late (read pressed in crank pin) crank will not fit into an early case that came with an early crank (crank pin with nuts). I think it changed in 2000. Still one can modify early cases to accept late cranks (the pinion race area needs to be modified).

Newer cranks will not have a nut on them they are not rebuildable. They are a press fit. Older cranks will have a nut on both sides. They are rebuildable. A 01 uses the newer style crank. For what you would spend at S&S you will be better off buying stock. Trust me I have built many cranks for my drag bike.

Not to start some sort of flaming, but press fit cranks are rebuildable. We do at least 1 a day (that includes Twin Cams)

We have done them pretty much since inception.

Early K model sportsters (52-53)had pressed together cranks and we did those many years ago.
