My bike will not go past 2nd gear. It will not shift into 3rd. It will go down to neutral and 1st. Any ideas before I go to the shop? '03xb9r with 27,000 miles. |

First off, for this kind of "long distance trouble-shooting" more and precise info is better, so if you can elaborate we can be of more help. That said, did you make any changes to your bike recently? If so, what? Other than that; - bent shift forks - shifter detent plate walking out due to shift drum pins moving - don't know if this is an issue for the XBs with the new transmission. - primary chain tensioner; is the rub block intact and in place? I had a Dealership adjust the primary about 6 weeks ago. I think this might have something to do with it. The shop did not have a shop manual I found out later. It had happened a couple of times in the last week but then it would shift. Always happened after running high into RPM before shifting into 3rd. The chain tensioner (shoe?)was replaced 13,000 miles ago. I just want to be somewhat informed when I take it in. Thanks again Chris |

Some believe, that even adjusting the primary chain per the Service Manual may leave the primary chain a bit on the tight side. Now if one were to not check and find the tightest spot on the chain before adjusting, the chain could end up even tighter still = not a good situation. In theory, depending on how many miles you put on the bike since the adjustment, that could have taken a chunk off the primary chain tensioner, which in turn could have blocked moving parts in there. Now that's all speculation, so don't get too wound up Speaking of service manual ... you do own one - right - you ought to even if you're not planning on wrenching. It's good for exploring, learning and trouble shooting ... and I just happen to have a Service Manual/Parts Manual combo for sale here Hope you get it sorted out at the dealer. Please let us know what they find. Henrik |

I spoke to the dealership on the phone this morning and they claim that there is no way at all that adjusting the primary chain would have anything to do with my transmission not working properly. The best news is that my extended warranty ended Saturday of last week. |

Thanks for the update. I guess I in general would agree, it's certainly not the first thing that comes to mind - however, something obviously did happen in there between the service and now. Personally I would have refrained from commenting until I'd taken a peek in there ... but that's just me. Henrik |

Finally have an update! I ordered the shop manual and my motorcycle mechanic buddy and I were gonna pull the engine and split the cases as we assumed it was a shifter fork. Before I started, I spoke to a former Buell/HD mechanic and he said to check the clutch adjustment. That's all the problem was! 500 problem free miles last week. Boy was I relieved. I don't have the mechanical skills to pull the engine. |

Someone here surely meant to advise that you check the clutch. That sure is a welcome outcome. Thanks for letting us know that extremely valuable knowledge. |

Certainly valuable knowledge. I would think that if I called a dealer and spoke to a "Buell Certified" tech, that he would have considered that also. I have learned not to ever go to that dealership again and shouldn't have even called them. When I had them rebuild my front forks, they called me and told me that I had a headlight out! |
