Bought a 99 X1 recently, and have a few questions for ya'll out there. First I will give you the best background on the bike i can.

Bought from a guy, who bought it from his nephew. The guy i bought it from said it had a white brothers race pipe and stock air filter on it when he got it. He also told me the check engine light comes on after the bike warms up, but the dealer he took it to, said it threw no codes.....ok... Well, after the white bros. exhaust started falling apart, he bought a stock setup off Ebay, and also put a K&N replacement filter on it...and never had the computer re-mapped. I figured this might be the reason the check engine light comes on.

The bike runs good, but not at its full potential that i think it could. I recently ordered the Vance&Hines SS2r slip on, and figured that i would get it remapped after i got that on, along with wrapping my pipes with black header wrap. I inspected the pipes recently to see where the o2 sensor was, and found out THERE IS NO o2 SENSOR ON THERE!!!

Could this be the main problem for why the check engine light comes on after a minute or so? Is there a way to bypass or eliminate the sensor? I see i can get a sensor off the Ironmachine website at a decent price, would i just be better off welding a bung in the proper location and puting the sensor back in? Does anyone know the thread size of the o2 sensor? And where is the plug that goes to the sensor? does it come out underneath the battery?

I am suprised the bike runs decent without this sensor. Any and all suggestions to help me get this figured out will be very much appreciated!

There is no remapping of the ecm but rather a factory race ecm that works pretty well. You could add a Power Commander which allows some fine tuning of some aspects of fuel injection, in my opinion its not worth the effort. If you wish to retain the stock injection just pick up a stock exhaust header off of ebay and put in an automotive equivalent to the stock O2 sensor if not the stock sensor. Not sure where the plug comes from maybe someone can get out to the garage before me and check for you. My bike runs reasonably well with the stock header and sensor, K&N, and V&H and race ecm. No trouble light. Let us know how you make out.

Changing out the ecm will require resetting the TPS(throttle position sensor) settings. This needs to be done by the dealership.

Thanks for the replies! I checked the computer codes this morning just to see what came up. Code 13, 14, 15. The code 13 i knew would obviously pop up, due to not having the o2 sensor hooked up. Are the codes 14, 15 for the engine temp. sensor and intake air temp. sensor going to pop up anyway when the bike is stone cold, or is this something that i might need to replace since the codes are showing?

Picked up a sensor for the dealer this morning, going to weld a bung in this weekend and install it. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for your inputs. Anymore, just keep'em coming!

On my 2000 S3T, the wire comes from the area above the battery. So the wire is wire tied to the battery area. There is a terminal block in this area, but the O2 sensor does not go to the block. The wire comes from behind it, near the oil tank.

Good luck,

Mark
