I have an '06 XB9 with the black transclucent air filter cover. Upon returning to LA from Vegas (where I bought it) I noticed that the cover has cracks coming out from around both fastening bolts in the front. Does anyone know what would cause this, or if it's covered with the factory warranty??

The translucid A/B cover I bought came with a rubber grommet/sleeve kit. Which is different from just the screws and plastic washer set up that came with the solid black on my '04.

I haven't heard anything about being under warranty. I can get you a part number for the grommet/sleeve kit on Tuesday. IIRC, it was around $9.00

You guys aren't the only ones...I have a 2006 and I am going in for my 2nd cover with 4000 miles. There is a definite issue here. I spoke with Buell Corporate about getting a Aluminum cover. They said that they do not make metal covers.

That doesn't sound good.
Is there a way to prevent it? It would suck having a cracked translucid cover on a brand-new bike.

I haven't removed these on mine yet, hope they are of the rubber grommet/sleeve kit sort...

Perhaps would be best leaving these screws tightened very lightly. Right?

Mine too is cracked, but alas I earned that on, a high speed slide over dirt. Frame pucks work! but did shatter the bolt holes on the case. got some 3M clear sheet holding it together top and bottom. Now I go slower around that damn corner.

Mine cracked really badly around one of the front mounting holes. Was only about 10mths old, '06 XB12S.
I had it replaced under warranty, no questions.
The new cover had the same plastic washers, no rubber grommets.
I don't see that there is too much pressure on the plastic, as the screws have collars that stop you over tightening?

If anyone has the part number for the rubber grommet/sleeve kit, I may swap them over.
Thanks

Same problem here. Except both front mounts are broken now and it vibrates like crazy. Does anyone know if this part is covered under the extended warranty?

Send a pm thx.

I had the same thing happen. I recall that on a really hot day (here in Virginia) I heard a few "pops" after parking the bike. I looked it over but didn't notice until later that the airbox cover had cracked on two of the bolt holes, and the flyscreen cracked around a couple also. Is there any possibility that heat could be a problem?

I posted this in the Court.

The plastic is covered under warranty. I have been through 4, yes...4, air box covers..

On this last one I changed over to a solid black cover and wind screen.

Yes, the replacements are covered under warranty and YES that ARE VERY FAMILIAR with the problem. When I spoke to Buell Tech they asked me a couple of questions about my fueling habits and whether or not I attached a tank bag.

They also did indicate to me that the chemical makeup had been changed in the translucent airbox covers between '07 and '08.

I opted away from the translucent to a solid color. When you tap the plastic you can hear the difference.

The short answer is that its covered by warranty!

Thats good bit of data to know that the composition changed in 08... thanks for posting that!

My "ears" are broken there as well, but I think that was my fault for installing them wrong. I repaired one with polyurethane glue, which is holding up OK (glue a washer underneath it to hold it together). I'll try "marine goo" type stuff next and compare that.

Hmm.... looks like I'm taking my bike in. My '07 XB9SX has small cracks, and no real reason they should be there. wondering if I should get the solid or clear one.........

Still havent tried the marine goo yet, but the poly glue did finally come off.

The bolts are supposed to be such that they have a built in shoulder, so they actually seat against the frame and just pin the airbox cover. If you don't line them up in the center of the aribox holes when you reassemble, you can stress that plastic and put small cracks in the cover.

I'll try the automotive goop next. Its working very well for similar roles holding a lot of different parts of my KLR-250 together.
