I read through the other posts but haven't found a problem that seemed the same as mine. Last night during a nice ride my bike shut down while turning onto a main road. I pulled over and found the 15A ignition fuse blown. I tried the spare and it blew the instant I turned the key to ON. The gauges jump up like normal and go back to zero, lights come on, neutral light is lit, but the fuel pump does buzz, the starter won't turn over, and the red engine light doesn't come on. Any ideas? I am new to Buell and love the bike but walking it home for almost 2 hours sucks. Battery reads 12.1 volts turned off and I read 11.2 at the ignition fuse, that is as far as I have gotten looking for the problem. Last weekend I changed the plugs with Iridium models and put the dielectric grease in the boots, other than that nothing has been modified. Thanks in advance for any advice you all can give! | ||

Update: I went to the HD dealer and bought a new battery after work today (battery was aftermarket and I don't know the date it was installed). I installed a new fuse and to my surprise the bike started right up! Although it is nice the bike is running again I am still skitish about going for a ride and having it happen again. The new battery tested at 12.2 volts when I installed it and charges at 14.1 at 2500 rpm. Any insight is appreciated, could this have caused my problems? | ||

Hmmm.... those might be two solutions to two symptoms to two problems. 1) Blown fuses on 03 lightnings... look for a wire behind the flyscreen that is chafing on a horn bracket. 2) Low battery won't start bike... Yup. The next nut to crack is to see if the old battery was dead, or if some other part of the charging system is bad. Normally you would do this first, but as you now have a new battery on the bike, you will know after about an hour or two of riding if the battery was the problem or not  If you want to do the full diagnosis, the service manual is great. If you want another approach, I have a writeup in the knowledge vault. It was written for my previous tuber, but it is basically the same for the XB. Pushing sucks. I had to push my 9sx 50 feet on I-75 this afternoon. Note for future reference... you have 28.7 miles after the low fuel light goes on... unless you are pointed downhill, in which case you have 29.1 miles. The 50 foot push was to get to the crest of the hill, so I could then coast down the exit ramp, right into the parking lot of the gas station I was ssstraininggggg to reach. Whew! | ||

The old battery is still here, haven't gotten rid of it yet. I was thinking about having it tested. I am not low on gas, I filled up yesterday before my ride and only went about 20 miles, maybe less. The lights all lit up, but there was no fuel pump, no clicking, nothing. The battery wasn't too low on power, that I am pretty sure of. When I installed the new fuses they would blow instantly. I will go pull the fly screen off and see what I can find. |
