Author Message   Ron Posted on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 08:38 pm:        The following is simply a spring time tip for those of you with pipes that are due a re pack. I just repacked the muffler on my wifes Road King which has a White Bros E pipe on it. I used some stainless steel wool (medium wire) that I tracked down on the internet. I used it because I have a Borla header and muffler which is packed with stainless steel and have never had a system I liked the sound of better. The result was very similar with the pipe I re packed. No harsh bark, only a very deep rumble - even with the wick wide open. So if you have a muffler you can re pack and find it a little hard on the ears (ya some of us old farts while still enjoying the rush have grown to appreciate "mellow" try using stailess steel wool. The stuff I got came in a 5" wide roll and all I did was spiral wrap it around the core and stuff it back in the pipe. It sounds much better than the fiber glass pack and should last much longer. I repacked my race muffler with a sheet of ceramic packing one time. It dissintegrated and blew out in 120 miles of street riding and one 15 min. track session :0 Some muffler manufacturers claim to use an endless strand type ceramic packing, which should be less prone to blowing out. Not sure about the backpressure comment but the packing material sure sounds interesting, obtainable, and hopefully affordable. -Saro   Djkaplan Posted on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 02:52 pm:        I had bad luck with SS wool I used to pack some Eagle sidemount header mufflers on my Camaro. The SS corroded to a point where it made getting the slip-in mufflers impossible to get out of the sidepipes. I don't thing they use the best SS for stainless steel wool. I'd stick with the rock wool.
