Is ICON good gear or just bling bling cool guy gear.

Basically I'm looking for daily hard use stuff.

Hey, Chrisb -

Are you looking at textiles or leathers? Armor?

I've got a bunch of Vanson, H-D FXRG and BMW riding gear and the stuff is well made, durable and functional; it looks pretty cool too. It's not cheap, though. I have an older Joe Rocket jacket that's fine too, but it's not as good as my other stuff.

Icon and JRocket jackets seem to have less flexible armor; it may or may not be CE approved, if that matters to you. Some people don't mind rigid armor, or even prefer it. Check the seam stitching too; lower-end jackets usually are not stitched as solidly. You know what they say, dress for the get-off, not the ride.

There are lot of great reviews of gear on this site and others too. Motorcycle.com, motorcycleusa.com, ... .

Icon stuff is decent, but it's not on par with Vanson, Alpinestars, BMW riders' apparel. It's probably a notch above JRocket. H-D's FXRG line is not bad either. I've heard mixed things about Icon gear; they look good, but the attention to detail isn't as solid as it could be.

Check out Tourmaster/Cortech and FirstGear apparel too. Hope that helps.

Carl

I just bought a pair of the Icon TiMax pants on clearance from Denniskirk.com, and I have mixed feelings about them. I wanted them to wear as over-pants, but because of the way the armor is placed it is not possible to wear then that way. So, I can wear them for long rides, but not as pants to get me to/from work. You also can't wear then as regular pants, but hiking them up as high as you can puts the armor where it is supposed to be when you are seated. So, they aren't what I wanted, but for $70 they are awful nice touring pants. I wore them all day long in 80 deg. weather and didn't have a problem. I am hoping I can find a pair of Roadgear HT overpants on sale somewhere, as they are meant to be overpants so they should work much better.

Looking for mesh actually. I'm thinking about going to the Vanson Mesh listed on NewEnough.com Its only a few bucks more than similar First Gear and cheaper than the Joe Rocket stuff. Actually for a fair comaparison only the Joe rocket jacket comes close. Both have addtional leather in the shoulders and elbows. Everybody else's jackets are 100% mesh no leather additons. And like is was said above, "dress for the get-off".
I work on a Military base so long sleeves are required even in the summer. I know I could just wear a long sleeve shirt but the cagers seem to drive even worse anymore. Hopefully the gas prices will get then slow down a little.

I have an ICON leather jacket an ICON helmet and some ICON gloves.
The jacket and helmet are top notch.
Jacket is stitched nice n sturdy and the helmet is ALOT quieter than my HJC.
The gloves...
After 3 HOURS! of riding they ripped out were the velcro attaches to the strap and dealer wouldnt take em back.

I guess it's a hit or miss type thing
DEFINETLY inspect whatever your buying good n close.

I have a cortech DSX denim jacket. It has a nice liner, plenty of vents, and CE armor. You can find them online for 89-99 dollars, and a great value for a really nice denim jacket.

That said, over the last 10 years, I have been using first gear products. Their leather comes with liners and armor standard, plus a 10 year warranty.

My winter gear is the first gear kilimanjaro jacket, and HT overpants. they are waterproof, and incluse CE armor.

I couple of younger guys I know have gone for the Icon stuff, lots of bling, but that is about it. the vents on both helmets failed, and the latching mechanism on one helmet died.
After using the jackets, (they havent slid down the road in jeans yet, so no pants) they decided to ebay them and get other gear.

Here is my .02 for what it's worth. This weekend I had a fairly decent crash that everyone was extremely surprised I didnt come out dead or extremely hurt. My bike took the brunt of it. Basically I destroyed my bike (some think it's totalled and some dont) and also took out a 8X8 posting that holds up a guard rail. The 8X8 post was demolished just to show you how hard I hit. What am I getting at? The gear I was wearing saved my arse, literally! I had a HJC helmet which I dont rate as being high but a decent helmet. I had ICON hooligan gloves that I have had for over a year. I hear mixed reviews on these. The poster named Buelltroll obviously got one of the crappy pairs, luckily I did not. You either get a good set or they stink and the stitching, etc.. falls apart. Mine have been tested now and they performed excellent. Had on a Hein Geirech (spelling) jacket and some Dainese pants that came out very well. HTH. If your second guessing the quality dont get it! Just remember your not buying this stuff for the looks even though we all take that into consideration. You want this stuff to work for what it's intended for, saving your hide when nasty things happen.

I just got a pair of the Hooligan 2 gloves and they seem to run a size small. All the gloves I have are XL (motocross, snowboarding, etc...) but the XL Icon feel like a L.

I've been reading different reviews and they are saying they fit like other gloves. Maybe I'm not used to gloves being as tight as these are so take my opinion with a little warning. Find a dealer to try on for size if you are looking into gloves at any time.
