I followed a thread in this area through many postings, but am not sure of the final outcome. Are the late model oil pumps more efficient than mine and are they compatible? I read several articles equating oil on the flywheels to runnning through water, and the reduction of that oil (scavenging?) equating to free horsepower. I realize the flywheels have to sling oil for lubricating purposes, but can engine power be noticeably or measurably realized by a more efficient sump? Also saw the $500 aftermarket unit...would like to hear from anyone running one.

Oil pump change was in 1998, yours is fine. Axtell has a tech talk that discusses scavenging / performance gains but site was not up when I just looked. I believe they were talking 15 hp with "proper oil managment", I suspect a windage tray (not a lotta room for one) and running less than full.

Axtell sells a 2 to 1 geared pump, I have no experience with one, but $500??!! ouch.

Pat - Thanks for the response. I saw the same Axtell tech section and the 15 hp got me excited. Zippers sells the unit, but it's a lot of $. Hope your weather breaks soon.

Pumps also changed again in 2001.

What was the change in '01? I know the '98 change was to dual inlet.

Port timing was tweaked on the scavenge side of the pump body .

Thanks. This is the only web site I know where you can have a knock down drag out discussion of gyroscopic effects on roll rate, & still find what a mystery part # is from.
