Argh! I have been working on my 88" M2 for a while now and since the weather is warming, I now have it wired, buttoned up and just about ready to go. Needless to say, I am very eager to get out on the road. Now comes the part which explains why I never finished a EE degree.....I can't get it to start.

First, it would only click....after much searching, post on starter was loose.

Second, it started twice, but ran briefly and very rough.

Third, no spark? I have run through the troubleshooting in the manual and I do get spark when shorting the cam sensor wires. Replaced cam sensor, but no improvement. Ignition resistance tests ok, but manual does not list a next step. I did find the coil and plug wires were backwards, but I don't know if that would have caused any damage.

3.5, after replacing cam sensor, no electrical at ALL. Turns out the eyelet that attaches to the starter broke off. Fixed it, now back at item three again.

Anyway, I have eliminated the following through various tests:
Cam sensor
Battery
Spark Plugs
Plug Wires
Clutch Switch
Sidestand Switch
Coil
Fuses, Relays, etc.

Any help or even empathy would be greatly appreciated. I keep telling my wife that this is why I need two bikes. Although I am still lusting for a Ducati for a second bike.....then I will just have two bikes that won't run without constant TLC.

Well, I had hoped to post that all was well and it is running! No such luck. After re-examining all my work and the troubleshooting section of the manual, I concluded it was the cam position sensor in the nose cone. I went and ordered one. While waiting, I decided to see if I could test the sensor since I have two of them and neither was producing spark. I pulled out the metal portion that attaches to the cam and pulled out the sensor and figured I would rotate it by hand and see if I got spark.....I did! I put it all back together, turn on the ignition (get a little spark here - a good sign) and thumb the starter, NO SPARK . The starter runs and I get spark, just not at the same time. Did I mention that it is over 80 degrees out today and at least one bike rides by my house every five minutes. I'll just keep plugging away. Maybe if I run it over to East Troy, Erik will have pity on me and wave his magic wand over it to get it running.

Well, I am down to replacing the one part I don't have a spare of....the ignition module. When I bought this bike, it had a spare K module that had never been open. To appease my better half, I sold that along with most of the other spare parts that had any value. Murphy's law now dictates that to be the bad part. I pulled the whole wiring harness off and hooked up my racing harness (no charging, fuses, signals, etc.). Basically there is an on switch, starter & ignition, nothing else. The only parts that remain from the old wiring setup are coil, module & plugs. Since I have tested different coils & plugs, the module must be bad. Why did I take this project on again?

One last try.....I am still working on this and have confirmed that it is something in the ignition system. I get spark when manually rotating the sensor, but when I use the starter, no spark. The relays were suggested to me, but no change after swapping them out.

Good thing I bought a Duc or else I would've missed out riding this summer. It's scary that the Duc has been bike running all summer!

sounds like a possible weak battery. try bump starting it. with a fresh and tight 88 incher, you will probably need to use 4th gear.

Nut backed off pinion gear. Cams weren't turning. Bent pushrod and one valve not seating. Kutter HD fixed all and it is FINALLY running. I still need to go over the bike completely. Wiring, oil hoses, fasteners, etc. It's just easier to get motivated when the engine runs! Maybe after starting 2+ years ago, I will finally finish this project.
