Below are two pics of the front fairing and rear tail section of my 1995 S2 with just under 23,000 miles on it so far. I'm looking for suggestions on how to repair these issues.

The front fairing damage was caused by a couple of punk kids throwing chunks of truck tire tread at oncoming traffic several years ago, I wrote about the incident then and don't want to get back into the details of the incident.

The rear tail section crack below the license plate I'm told is fairly typical.

I'm thinking on the tail section to just clean up the underbody and then lay in some fiberglas to reinforce the area. Then if and when I get the bike painted to smooth the visible surface and maybe seal the crack and then repaint.

For the fairing I've put some clear sealer over the chipped out area sometime after the incident. For repair I'm thinking a total repaint since there is some additional transient cracks in the paint running up the left side of the headlight opening. Structurally the fairing is sound as best as I can tell by looking it over closely while it's still on the bike.

I've got some other work to do on the bike (minor carb gas leak, front engine mount isolator rubber thing) plus some other performance tuning/tweaks. I'm also still thinking of swapping out the handlebars for some clipon style, but want to sort of match the current geometry of the stock bars, but that's a topic for a different thread.

Any and mostly all comments are welcomed.

And some general pics for those who aren't totally familiar with the S2's. And, yes, I'll be doing something with the air filter (for you purists out there, you know who you are ;) )

The wires shown here are for the Backoff LED's below the license plate:

I do have a new unused seat to put on the bike, but this one seems to fit the bike better. And, yes, that's not the original lock for the seat. I had to fab that one up as the one that the bike came with wasn't working so good.

So, about that fiberglas repair suggestions....

Thanks for any help or direction.

ps, if I do keep this and eventually get it repainted I'd like to replicate the ice white pearl paint scheme with a little something extra added on top. Not sure what just yet, but have plenty of ideas.

On the tail section you want to get it plastic welded if its plastic. call up your local sport bike shop and find out where they get it done. Its a common fix.

Both of our S2's still have the Marchesini stickers!
Wonder where a guy gould get replacements, I need to repowdercoat mine.

EZ, just for reference, all the body work on the S2's is glass or CF.

Mike, I highly recommend the AF backing plate by Aaron.
American Sport Bike has them.
I've got one both the M2 and my S2. Carl's will have one soon.

Brad,
Do you know if that a/f uses the basic non-S2 c/f race filter cover, or would I need to acquire a new cover as well? It looks like I'd need a new cover to me. Post a pic of your's if you can so I can see what it looks like on the bike. Thanks.

Mike,
Looks like you'll need a cover as the S2's are different spacing.
Here's a pic of Carl's, it's the same as mine.

Maybe you can get one of the new backing plates with the offset of the new style like yours.
I'm betting Al could arrange it.

I'll have to check into that once a little money starts flowing again. Thanks for posting the pic.

Got the tank cover off last night and got the carb off, the plastic inlet fitting was cracked and was the cause of the light gas leak. Found some numbers on the inside of the tank cover and can't remember what Court or 1313 or someone else said the numbers mean. Unlike Ferris/Jerry's S2, mine did not have a build signoff sheet taped inside the cover, bummer.

Anyway, here's the cover pics. I kind of like the fiberglas bodywork vs. the "newer" formed non-glass plastic.

Looks like 400 5/30 and GW. Does this mean it was cover 400 and pulled from the mould on May 30th 2004 and checked by someone with the initials of G.W. ? That's my guess anyway.

Looks downright naked, and totally filthy. (That's the M2 in the background standing guard.) I'll get the frame cleaned up, probably replace the intake seals, re-route the breather lines so they don't puke onto the front fender, and haven't decided if I want to bother with opening up the rockers just yet to do the Blast/XB style breather conversion.

I did find one of the tank bumpers rotated around the frame, so it's good I did this otherwise I'd be needing that spare tank I picked up at Sauk HD/Buell a few years ago.

Oh well, guess I'll start looking into fibrglas repair kits, and then dig out the airbrush and see if I remember anything about painting or just find someone current in the business. I do think I've come up with a paint theme that should be pretty sweet if it works out right, have to do some sketching on the idea. No hurry though since this might have just turned into a Summer project.

Looks like I haven't got the only S2 with a horizontal a/f:

Mike,
Is your AF from a M2?
If so, and you decide to get the "proper" S2 style, I may have a buyer for your current version.
My neighbor just bought a 2002 Cyclone off Ebay last night.
We pick it up in Wausau on Saturday.
It has the stock Sampsonite intake.

Brad,
the c/f cover on mine has been trimmed a little, I used some curved tin snips to cut a small curve out of it where it came close to hitting the S2's gas tank cover. A guy could mount the cover with the trim on the bottom edge to not be so visible. Pretty sure I got it from Ralph in Nebraska off either an S3 or M2. I'll keep your neighbor in mind as I make decisions on this.

Thanks Court, I'll give that a shot followed up with a shot of primer until I can get a real re-paint job done on it.

Can you also decipher the "400 5/30 GW" on the inside of the gas tank cover? I put my guess a few posts up above. Thanks again.

ps, how's your S2 engine coming along?

Likely the date and initials....I can't recall who GW would be. I'll find out.

Later the bikes got a cute little, ala Martin Brown or Brankin Brehmer my guess would be, sticker where a person could check off processes as they were completed.

I recall when we had to started using heat to cure the tank covers to up production from 6 a day.
