hey guys , my c-clips just broke and the detent fell off ,i must have cought it just in time , didnt mess up any gears or anything , lucky me , haha but anywho , it already had the new dentet with the more pointed ends on it , it wore of the part numbes tho any one got the part number for it ,,, and also do most bike shops stock the part and the cost of it ? also , i dont have the cash for the new drum , and i hate to use the c-clip for it , has anyone ever got there new gear tig welded onto the drum? stud? my bike has only 6700 miles on it any help would greatly appreciated thanks | ||

also , forgot to mention , i was digging thru the arcives and did not really find any good info on the dogs, is it ok to just use a sharpening stone to smooth them out and it will be ok? thanks | ||

About the detent plate - the only "solution" I know of is the Baker "Easy Shift Kit" which replaces the shift drum and uses an allen bolt to secure the detent plate to the drum. The kit also comes with a detent plate - which is very close in shape to the older style detent plate. Henrik | ||

yup i got that style detent plate i think im gonna get a new plate and ti weld the little guy to that shaft , shouldnt really hurt anything , and i know the damn thing wont come loose ever again , besides this problem the bike always shifted really smooth with never any real problems | ||

You can also fit a bronze bushing on the shift drum shaft, replace the pins with a set that is fully seated and fixed in place with JB-Weld and use a crimp clip. The result is a rock solid detent plate with no end or side play. This also gives much better alignment and contact between the detent plate and arm. All parts are available at the hardware store and cost about $10.00 total. | ||

ok i just got back from the dealer , cost about 45 bucks for the detent, new chain adjuster, and the primary gasket , ill take some pics and ill report back any problems | ||

xldevil.... yea i was able to get the old gasket off real easy , i could have reused it , but with my bike ill buy new , with my race car ill reuse , dont ask why i just do haha but in other words , i got it together , sorry no pics , bit i did tig the new detent onto the shaft , i cut the old shaft off right where the old c clip went and just put the the new one on and welded into place , it wasnt to bad with the tranny cartridge together , but when installing ,. make sure you have the shift selector ready to slide into position when installing the catridge i did a short test drive , and so far it has been way better than even when i got it with 1800 miles on it , it has 6800 on it now , but ill report back tommorrow night , hoping it is real nice out to go for a good ride | ||

i did tig the new detent onto the shaft , i cut the old shaft off right where the old c clip went and just put the the new one on and welded into place If it would become necessary to replace any part of the tranny, you will have to cut off the detent plate and maybe buy a new shift drum,IMO You have to remove the shift drumm, anytime you need to get access to any transmission part. xldevil.... i know that ... i was waiting for someone to bust my bubble about it . honestly , from looking at that tranny it seems just about bullet proof , almost all of the problems of concern come from that damn c-clip comming loose , i did get to put about 75 miles on monday , shifted great the whole time no problems ... shifted firmer and alot easier nd if something else does break in this tranny who cares if i gotta do just a bit of grinding to get it off .... if need be i can mock it up in the milling machine and spot cut it off ... then i dont get griniding dust on the bearings if i was going to recomend this to someone i would ... a nice tig weld is alot better than a clip coming off and getting tossed thru the gears , or like on the upgrade kit that bolt could come loose over time and end up into the clutch basket , very likely it would hapen but you never know | ||

yea your right i am only 23 ... soon 24 . but i grew up really fast ... spent the majority of my time in a garage and at drag strips |
