I am in the process of changing the signals both front and back. I have removed both sets and aboutt o start hooking up the new lights. My question is this:

I just turned on my bike and without having any signals hooked up I used the turn signal mechanism to see what it would do and it makes a real annoying buzzing sound. Is this normal?

Also I was fooling around with the front turn signals and by touching the ends of the wires together to see if the signal would work and I only got a constant light instead of a blinking light. What am I doing wrong. Theres only two wires. How can I screw this up?
Do it have something to do with all of the lights being disconnected?

Sorry if my questions sound stupid, Ive never had a motorcycle before and I am trying to do work myself partly beccause I think its fun and partly because I figure the only way to learn is to get in there and get your hands dirty. I appreciate any help you can give me.

James

Well in most cars both front and rear signals must be connected for them to work---if you have a bulb out in either the other will not flash. And if you only have 2 wires going to the signal one is probably a ground and you don't want to be hooking the hot to the ground.Might explain the buzzing.Your flasher unit is protesting.

Flashers need load to work. If your lights weren't on the bike, your flasher was freakin out, that was the buzzing sound. With only one bulb hooked up, it will flash fast. With no bulbs hooked up, it is flash going from open to short in the flasher unit very fast, thus the buzzing. It isn't particularly good for the flasher, but probably didn't kill it.

I don't understand the "by touching the ends of the wires together to see if the signal would work and I only got a constant light instead of a blinking light" statement. Which two wires were you shorting together? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

Your turn signal wires on the left side of the bike are wired in parallel. One at each end of the bike is hot, the other is ground. The Flasher cuts the hot off and on at the flash rate determined by the flasher. If you're getting a constant on at the turn signal, then the flasher unit may be broken. Hook it up as normal on one side of the bike (i.e., both front and rear), and see if it flashes. Until the flasher sees a full load, it won't behave properly

If you are putting aftermarket turn signals on that don't consume as much current, your flasher will most likely not work with them anyway. You need one of these:

How easy is it to install that load equalizer you linked me to? It looks like a plug. Where does it plug? Will it work for all four lights?

I meant LED Flasher, not load equalizer. Thanks.

Trivial, plugs right in where your other flasher is currently plugged in, which I assume is under the fairing on a Firebolt.

The stock one has a metal tab on it. The flasher we sell does not. I just stole the tab from the stock flasher, doublestick taped it to the body of the new flasher, put a tie-wrap around it for safety's sake, and it's good to go.
