When I turned the key to start on my 00 s3t, I got smoke from under the seat near the battery/fuse panel and a blown 20A IGN fuse. This was before I hit the start button. I could hear the fuel pump cycle as normal. The smoke cloud was good sized but dissipated to fast to see where it came from. Any ideas where to look?

This is the ongoing saga of buying a used bike. I got the blown shock and muffler replaced, but someone/something doesn't want me to ride the bike yet. Damn gremlins.

IIRC, the speedo sensor powers from the ignition circuit - use to be a common problem of the sensor shorting. Disconnect the sensor (under the battery, sensor is on right rear of transmission above front sprocket). The kill switch keeps the ignition (run) relay down, and could be used to eliminate the wiring to the relay. The ignition power positive goes to the coil, injectors and pump, and the ECM switches the ground side to turn them on - therefore disconnecting them and then reconnecting one at a time may pin point it. A head lamp bulb connected across the fuse contacts is often used when tracking shorts - the cold resistance of the bulb is low, and with most stuff disconnected - it shouldn't light up. Good Luck!

Thanks for your suggestion. I was about to give up and cut the harness open. I unplugged the speedo sensor and the problem was solved. Easy fix which I wish I had tried first before checking pretty much every circuit that is charged when the ignition is on. And believe it or not the sensor was about the only buell part my dealer had in stock.

David(Bandirola):

That is "BECAUSE" it is the SAME SENSOR that is used in a SPORTSTER !!!

If you want to keep the fine metal down to a minimun that collects in the transmission,
adjust the PRIMARY CHAIN to 5/8ths inch on the tight spot(as long as the the chain is 5/8ths to
3/4s it will be fine)!!!
