Hey Guys, my speedo stopped working on the way home today after a long brisk ride. The fuses all seem to be good, the tach works but the speedo, odo, and tripmeters stopped working. The odo still reads but doesn't change. The speedo needle still sweeps when you turn the bike on???
Would this be the speed sensor??? Would taking it out and cleaning it help???
I"m going out of town monday and taking the bike so I'd like to have a speedo working while I"m riding in unfamiliar teritory...
Any help is appreciated..

Kevin

Kevin,

The problem may well be the sensor, and removing, cleaning and replacing it may solve the problem, or it may not. Let us know what you find.

Well, I cleaned it off and thought it was fixed but it seems to be still jumping a bit... Does anybody know, is the sensor a Buell specific part or is it used on HDs too... I'm over at the parents so I don't have the part number with me...

Well, it jumped once or twice when I first started out on the way home but it quieted down and acted right the rest of the way... I'll just keep an eye on it next week... I"ll be offline but I"ll let yall know if it holds up or not...

Hello Kevin . Did you have to replace your speedo sensor, or was it another problem?
My speedo on my 03 xb9s has just stopped working,so i removed the sensor to clean it and check the wires, but still no joy.
I would appreciate advice

IMO if you have to clean the SPEEDO SENSOR(of course the can and do go bad)your getting too much metal in the TRANS oil/fluid ...

The way you get too much metal in the TRANS oil/fluid is the PRIMARY CHAIN is adjusted
TOO TIGHT(should be adjusted to 3/4 inch on the tight spot when cold)... The way you find out
the PRIMARY CHAIN is too tight is when the speedo
starts to act up and when you pull the PRIMARY
COVER off the chain has worn into the CHAIN ADJUSTER PLASTIC PAD ... That's right the Factory Motors Manual is "WRONG" !!!

Thanks for the post Buellistic, i am still hoping it is a sensor gone bad, because when i wiped it clean there was only a little bit of magnetic crap on it, awaiting better Nova scotian weather to test it.The wife won't let me ride in the basement anymore! LOL

I have a '02 M2. I was on a trip down to Arkansas last week and my speedo went out. I have nothing on my speedo, no needle sweep at start up or anything no movement at all. but the tach and backlighting still work. I stopped in at a unnamed harley shop where the parts guy actually let me try a new speed sensor with out buying it. well that solved nothing. so now i am at a loss, any suggestions? your help will be greatly appreciated

I have a similar problem on my '99 M2, the speedo does not work, the needle does not sweep when I turn on the bike. The speedometer light does come on and the odometer reads but does not change. I also cannot switch between trip and regular odometer, but the odometer does switch itself randomly between the two. I pulled the speedo sensor from the bike and it was covered in about 3/8 inch of metal filings. I cleaned off the filings but it didn't make the speedo work any better. I bought the bike about a month ago from a local dealer, who got it on trade-in. The bike's odometer is stopped at just over 47,000 miles. Any ideas as to what the problem may be with the speedo?

Flair/Chass -- check your fuses first -- one of em can blow and lead to these symptoms

try a new sensor next (tho it didn't work for Chass)

My Y2K MaDuece does not sweep the speedo needle on powerup -- never has

probably a blown sensor. The updated kit fixes the problem (see the knowledge vault). If you can scare up an old part, or just the sensor and not the kit, I can tell you how to install it such that it won't blow with some minor connection work and a $10 trip to walmart.

I'll peruse the fuse box first just to make sure it's not the cause. Where is the fuse box exactly? And which fuse would it be? I don't have the manual for the bike yet : (

flair -- fuse block under the seat, right hand side of the scoot --

I don't remember which one it is/was, but it's good advice to check em all, and replace any that are blown
