Hallo.
Seems to me like I'm having the infamous first gear rounded off dog thing.
After searching the KV ,backcutting the dogs on first gear should cure this. But what exactly does it mean(backcutting) and how to do?Do I need any special tools? Will a good file do the job,or a grinder?
Btw.Bike is M2 tuber.
Kind regards from cold and rainy Germany,Ralph

Ralph; I only have very limited 2nd hand knowledge of back cutting. But I think you'd need someone with a CNC machine and experience in doing this. Not sure it'd be something I would take on with just a file.

Ralph that is specialty work and requires a mill or a grinder and the correct tooling, check with the board sponsors, ( Hill billy motors may be able to assist )
If you can cut the gear with a file it may be to soft If you attempted to do it by hand you would likely have further problems related to uneven engagement,
back cutting causes the gears to lock together tighter when more power is applied an exadurated profile would look like a dove tail joint in a drawer box

Oldog about dogs
Thank You for that, also it sounds bad to me.
Professionell backcutting is rare and expensive in Germany and I only know one firm which, maybe, could handle this for a Sportster transmission.HillBilly is not a good address for anything,IMO.
O.K.,so wouldn't it be easier to change the rounded parts/dogs of 1st gear?Which parts do I need for the job?Would it be better to go with Andrews?
Regards,Ralph

I think you may want to be certain of your problem before making any big plans based upon your current assumption. There may be other reasons for your 1st gear shifting woes, a bent shifter fork for one. Let us know what you ultimately find.

Ralph,

Do you have a service manual available?

Opening up your transmission is involved but not unreasonable with hand tools.

Hi.
I have my transmissions(5 speed Sporty and M2 Cyclone)opened already several times before. Never found it so "involved".Never had any probs.
Naturally I own a manual for each bike, plus the Clymer for the XL,special tools ,like primary locking bar, torque wrench and so on..
All I need to know are the part numbers for gears and retainers/circlips.

Regards,Ralph
