I'm about to start some top-end work on my S1W motor. While I have a nice strudy countertop/work bench, I was thinking it may be easier to have access to all sides of the motor. I found a nice rolling table that has a 200# capacity. I'm thinking this is plenty strong enough but..... Does anybody know the weight of the Buell motor? | ||

 I was gonna pick the motor up for this shot Lake - but I couldn't! I'd guess 200lbs is not far off which won't leave much working limit for tools and leaning etc but I'd assume any rated table is tested well beyond its max. Rocket | ||

What I like a lot about my S1W is amongst other things is it's the absolute perfect bike to showcase your own talents on. My goals to make my S1W extra special have been performance, quality, minimalism, individuality, attention to detail and no gimmicks- in no particular order. For me it works. It's not finished yet but it's close to how I'm gonna finalize it I think. I know there's 100 rwhp and I can squeeze more when I get her on the dyno this winter, but that I've decided is my limit. 88 inches is not the perfect way to go I'm advised. More than 88 would be awesome but it's a dedicated money pit. The side to that particular coin that always attracted me was making a rice rocket killer. When I bought this Buell I'd just turned 37 and I was still romanticizing about being a rebel on an underdog bike. I'm 44 now and I don't feel I have anything to prove LOL. Truth is the 916 has a very addictive power delivery. Can hand it to the opposition and is still not Japanese, and when you own one it makes sense to do 150 mph on it rather than try to make your Buell do likewise, which is a pointless exercise for a Buell when you have a 916. Horses for courses eh. I'd like to think I've got one of the best S1W's in the world and I hope you do too. That gives me a great deal of satisfaction. my best estimate about 175 pounds. i weigh 135 wet and can pick up the sportster engine flat off the floor and load it on a truck. it was heavy, but didnt hurt. | ||

Rocket, Will be anxious to see the final product of your efforts finished in all her glory. Fullpower, Were you the skinny kid at the feed store who threw two 50 LB bags of seed over his shoulder and carried them out to my truck? Don't mess with them wiry ones. They're nearly indestructable.  | ||

Cool! The nickle sure looks better than chrome IMHO! How does it do for durability, and are you able to touch up nicks, etc? | ||

Over the years I think, because it's subtle if anything, the nickel has tarnished. It appears more yellow than I remember it from fresh. There's a mottled thing going on too but you have to look very hard and close up to notice it. I have chipped it in a couple of place and there's not a lot you can do with it apart from touch it in with paint or cover it with some excuse. Be it a sticker or clamp for some oddity you're adding to the bike. I've done neither. Just kept my eye on it and it isn't getting any worse. The tubes and plates that are hard to get to don't come very bright when the plating is done. Mostly these are well hidden places, like around the battery tray and swing arm pivot area. The plate beneath the headstock too, but from time to time I give them a clean and coat them in grease. They're holding up fine as is the rest of the frame. I'm happy and it still looks great and it does give that classic appeal. Some days I think maybe I should have gone chrome but I always end up thinking that's too flash for my tastes. Rocket | ||

I do agree with you there. I've seen a couple custom choppers with chromed frames and, well, chromed EVERYTHING and they are just BLINDING! There's a nice subtlety to nickel; a "warmth", if you will, that chrome just can't match (same with firearms as well!  )I honestly think yours is the first I've seen with a nickel plated frame...what gave you the idea? I hope you get a chance to post some pix when finished! | ||

OK...new question. How does the weight of an XB motor compare to the weight of a V-Rod motor? How about a so-called 'state of the art' lightweight(?) KTM V-twin motor? | ||

Dennis, the above pic was taken off my Sony Eriksson K750i phone. It's the only pic I have of the motor built and out of the frame. It's also shot with the camera on the lowest possible image capture so there's not much you can do with it. If you like, I can take some shots of the motor as it is now, in the frame up and running, and it's filthy! Having a carbon black S1W with a lot of carbon fiber enhancing a nickel plated frame, and two predominant shades of alloy scattered around, it didn't take me long to decide on what colour to do the heads. Red was out because that's way too common Ferrari Testarossa, as in Ferrari Redhead, nah, even if red did match the battery. Now yellow on the other hand goes well with black. Even better, we have hints of yellow on the Buell switch gear. Yellow Accel wires and yellow Dymag lettering on the wheels. So to match Ferrari's brilliance I thought why not yellow when Ferrari themselves went with giallo fly. So that's how I got Yellow Head. Now then, a big friend of fine and a total total Harley nut showed me the trick with the rocker covers. Because they're three individual pieces, painting the middle piece looks very cool too, so that's what I did. Paint it YELLOW As you've most likely read already, I'm having the S1W brute painted sometime soon. Wait until you see that finished. Talk about stirring the pot. It's gonna rock but it's also gonna shock. And I don't mean the colour is gonna shock. Let me know on the pic's and I'll shoot 'em to your mail box at around 500 to 750k Rocket | ||

Got it....you painted the heads. I was looking at doing something in powder coat. More durable in the long run. Because I have the Pearl White S1W, I thought in needed a little color. My thought is to have the cylinders done in white and the rockers in blue. Like yourself, I have a few blue bits & pieces already but not quite enough. Pictures will be coming sometime in February. | ||

Oh Lake, how could you???? LOL The S1WL is a sacred beast and should only be enhanced visually if need be with genuine factory stuff, like the Race Kit header / muffler, billet foot pegs etc etc. Exceptions from visual stock stuff I'd allow if I had an S1WL, HSR42 with Forcewinder and Joker Machine indicators. I'd even concede it would be pointless putting Dymags or any carbon bodywork on a pearl white Demon. But it's your S1WL and I look forward to seeing your mods. Roll on Spring Time!! Rocket | ||

Dennis, I forgot to say, the two pack paint holds up great. The only downside, which I believe is a concern to you, is whilst it is tough it can chip easy, especially when you're working on or close to with tools of steel! It won't burn or scorch or whatever. Heat is in no way a problem. Rocket |
