Who makes a good strong starter for my tuber? I'm running high compression with no releases and I think my starter's about to give it up! I'd like to replace it with a super strong (geared down) one and wanted to see what people are running. Thanks, Lee

you already have a gear reduction starter, and a darned good one at that. that starter is powerful enough to crank a 502 inch big block chevy. if you must have an aftermarket starter, stay away from the spyke brand. they advertise as being all new, usa made, but the one they sold me was full of reconditioned parts, and the ball bearings were all chinese sheit. i had to rebuild the SPYKE starter fresh out of the box. that said the stock sportster/buell starter is a very good unit. if you are having difficult cranking it is likely due to a tired battery, insufficient or corroded battery cables, or static timing too far advanced.

Any suggestions where I can get an original starter rebuilt or get a rebuilt one?

That said, I agree with LaFayette. It is a pretty simple thing to do. I had to rebuild the starter on my old Yamaha twice in less than 20K miles. Had to replace the stator twice too. Third time I had it rebuilt/rewound. No, I wasn't running Mobil-1 gear lube in it. ;)

Look in the yellow pages for an "Auto Electric Rebuilder" you will find someone (like me) that rebuilds starters for a living. that is the place to have your Buell(or pickup truck, or excavator)starter fixed. or you can buy a set of contacts for the solenoid that will probably last another 60,000 miles or so. The stock Denso starter really is a good piece, suitable for an engine 5 times the size of your Buell.

So the slight pause on cranking a piston through the compression stroke on a warm (sometimes even cold) engine is due to what? A not large enough battery?

I'm not arguing about the starter, just wondering.

I've noticed that I never hear that slight pause on my FXD. Is that a better starter or because of the lower compression (8.5:1 compared to 10:1 on the M2).
