I'd replace it. Too much at risk not to.

I buttoned it all back together. Thats a lot less wear then my M2 had at 17k or so miles.

If I am getting close to 40k miles and have had no other reason to rotate the engine forward and / or pull the rocker boxes, then I will probably do it then.

I promise not to whine if it grenades and lunches my engine...

So how long until someone comes up with a modified inspection port in their cam cover to keep an eye on this????? Is there even a clear spot to bore a tapped inspection hole????? I do have a spare/extra cam cover I was thinking of trimming down anyway.
Just curious and threatening to inspect my bikes for wear. Maybe in late July sometime.

edit: dang, just noticed my post above from May 2005 about needing to check this on my bike(s), guess I haven't ridden much since then, gotta do something about that, dang, time sure flies when you're busy.

I don't know if this thread is still alive, but John (Whitebuell) how many millimeters did you mill your pump?
Thanks.

"Oil pressure suffers also from that slack in the gear."

I don't see how. For every revolution of the pump drive gear, a worn gear will turn the pump exactly the same amount as a brand new unworn gear.

Its not that hard to drop the oil pump and peer up there (I use a digital camera).

I've been thinking about a modification to the oil pump. It's a bit different as the one done by Whitebuell, instead of shaving the pump, we can pull up the rotor shaft.

Shaving the internal part:

The bottom will look like this with 3mm up:

What do you think about this modification, could it be done? Do you see any problems?
Thanks in advance.

I'm now at 19633 miles on my '99X1.I pulled the oil pump down today.I can't see any sign of wear most of the way around the drive gear.Part way around i can see a wear band about .002-.004 wide.

I think i'll be FINE for another season W/O replacement.Do you think ANY sign of wear whatsoever warrants replacement? I don't think i want the teardown. But CAN do it if i have to.....at the moment

That isn't a problem. They will generally wear to a knife edge before they finally start breaking.

That one will probably be good for the life of the bike.
