Due to all the crack down in the XBoard, I am posting this here. Just recently put the open air box kit from American Sport Bike on my XB9R. I was considering putting one of the vented outer Air boxes on my bike. My question is if any one else has an open air box w/ the outside cover having holes/mesh in it?

I also just put the open airbox kit on my 9R. Can't give you much feed back yet due to the fact that I just got it done and it is too late to go out and ride it. I haven't modified my outer box yet but I am very seriously considering it.

What are your thoughts on the open airbox kit with your stock outer? Do you like it? Did you notice any difference?

I have a carbon fiber outer airbox that is vented. It is similar to the one from American Sport Bike except the vents are raised up from the cover. I have been trying to post a picture but have been having trouble. My inner airbox cover has been cut to line up with the outer one so you can see the air filter through the outer cover. Seems to work well but motor noise is louder. Also, what is the benefit to removing rubber snorkel?

I noticed a faster rev. as well as obvious intake noise...it also deepens the tailpipe note. As for noticing a difference, not sure if it really gave it any noticeable power besides the sound making it feel tough and fast.

As for the snorkel, I think it just makes it a touch more of a deep tailpipe note(I took out the snorkel before doing the open air box). Not really sure it does anything other than changing the note. Theoretically though it should allow more air into box because of less restriction...

Any thing you do to product improve the air intake on the XB and BLAST models changes the
"EPA Db NOISE LEVELS" to more intake noise ...

damn .. i nearly killed myself trying a clutched 1st gear wheelie after drilling front of airbox cover & holsawing 1" holes on R side..

now i am over attempting wheelies, i am considering the total airbox filleting ...

noise & 2stroke powerbandiness are what have resulted so far, w/ addition of rackit.

I have a Swisscheese air box on an XB9R with complete race kit. Performance is better. No dyno data yet but I can actually feel the difference. Use about a 3/4 inch drill bit with devil ear edges to cut the plastic easier. Recommend the holes be drilled between the structural mold lines (look on the inside of the box). This should help retain the strength of the box.

The idle is a bit higher and smoother. No more of the occasional "pops" from the airbox when idling in traffic with a hot motor. I can feel better low end torque and faster/easier climbs to the rev limiter. Top gear acceleration is also improved. The front end has a new found ability to come off the ground on fast take-offs...

Of course it is much louder and I seem to hear just as much induction noise as exhaust noise. At higher revs, the induction is louder than the exhaust. I wear hearing protection anyway - so no big deal.

I highly recommend opening the air box as much as possible while retaining the air filter. Much cheaper than buying a kit and modifying the breather hoses.

I will post dyno data when I get it done.

How come my 2006 XB12Ss doesn't have that hole in the frame like in the pics above (the area to the left front corner of the airbox with the hole to the frame). My frame is sealed right there. I did just cut the air box like some of the photos and I just fired it up in the garage and you can hear all sorts of new sounds from the airbox, definately is louder.

They got rid of the "snorkel" that fed air to the airbox from the left side scoop. The 06's and up pull in air from a vent behind the gas cap in the top of the airbox and the left side scoop is dedicated to cooling the rear cylinder.

Isn't the vent behind the gas gap considerably smaller than the hole in the frame would be?

It sounds like the inner air box was weak link on the older XB's. Now it sounds like the weak link on my 2007 XB12 is the outer airbox???

The area of the opening behind the gas cap plus the gap between the outer air box and
frame is larger than the area of the throttle body when wide open.

No worries : )

her's what i got. the outer cover off ebay from seller eastcarbon $180US
the filter cover i made a mould and made myself. this pic is the first one i made. as the ones to purchase all seemed to have to reroute the oil breathers to replace with securing bolts or drill a hole in the middle of the lower airbox to use a single bolt adn i did not want to do either. I can make these to be used with any method of securing. i just have some elastic, could use silicon or drill the holes thru for either other method of mounting. made with jelcoat adn fibreglass on bottom and real carbon fibre on top. if anyone is interested am able to supply these relatively cheap. will provide better pics when i finish my next one.
