The biggest problem I have getting more rpm has nothing to do with valve float and everything to do with breathing.

Assuming we've done everything possible to optimize the intake (dual carbs, ported heads?) and exhaust efficiencies, improved breathing would require bigger or more valves, right? Assuming we want to stay with a two valve head we are stuck with using bigger valves. Bigger valves have more mass. How much spring pressure can we stand before reliability becomes an issue?

If NASCAR can spin 9500, why can't we? I guess that's were JM is heading. :)

I long for the day when the only thing holding me back from 9500rpm is that I can't control the valvetrain. I'm having one hell of a time getting enough breathing to make power at 8000rpm, and that's on the oversquare Blast!

That said, I believe the fat boy from Iowa twists his square 88 incher over 8500 on it's way to 153rwhp. Those Baisley dual-carb heads must really work.

Aaron, that problem becomes more evident when I think of the huge throttle bodies that the superbikes run. I think Duc is up in the 60mm diameter realm.

Is the HP curve going flat or just starting to round down? Man, I'd love to be up there watching you dial the engine in.

The feuling 4 valve heads have never shown much improvement over anything else.

They're still around under a different name. No there wasn't an improvement. A well worked over head did a better job. The plugs were in the middle of the rocker box covers, plugs were a bitch to change.

Any comments on dry fouling? Valve stem seals? Sure hate to spend $600 on a few valve stem seals. Will TPS cause dry foul? How long can I let this go on?

I realize that the valvetrain on X1s can be noisy, but should I be hearing a clacking noise like solids that need adjusting? It's pretty constant, and goes up and dowm with the RPM. The bike was sitting for several months out of state, and I haven't taken it out much since I got it back here.(long story)Did the lifters bleed down? Should it go away with a long ride? Or should it be there? Thanks for any info.

I had a Jims tappet fail taking out a mountain motor. Jims has said under oath that I am the only one to have a failure. The axle walked out of the tappet. Jims only stakes the axle in three places and it is NOT an interference fit. This can also cause an apparent bearing failure although in reality it is the axle rotating in the tappet body. Jims refuses to recall this product yet Jims is coming out with "new" designs which have a 360 degree stake. The auto makers knew about this problem for years. If anyone has had a Jims lifter failure contact me at 510-524-7490. I am trying to get enough people to force a recall.

X1rated,
If it doesn't stop after 30 miles of riding, you might want to ask a trusted mechanic to give your engine a listen.

I wish I could find a trusted mechanic around here! Took it out yesterday and rode fairly gently for a couple miles, and the noise has mostly quieted. I guess what I really need to know is if these engines, with the higher lift cams, should have some valve clatter. My Ironhead has solids (adjusted correctly, mind you)and some fairly high lift cams and is quieter that the X1. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just new to all this technology. (Yes, to me,hydraulic lifter are new technology)

Blake,
I took it out yesterday, for some more "spirited" riding, and it's running great.
I assume if there was something happening with the lifters, it would not be. Just got a little freaked.
Thanks!

Help please! I have to get this done before 5PM.

I am new at this so bear with me. I have the rocker boxes off and am ready to put the new style steel gaskets on. Which way to you oriente the gasket? With the part# side up or down?

Also, if I don't have a inch/lb torque wrench, how tight do you make 90-120 in/lbs for the 2 lower rocker allen bolts?

Thanks.

Leeaw..

Number side up. Knowledge vault search shows several messages, including this one:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/13251.html?MondayJune1020021249pm#POST105888

To go from inch pounds to foot pounds, divide by 12. 120 in pounds is 10 foot pounds. As I recall, that was a good firm push on a normal allen key so that it was just starting to deflect a little.

Remember to tighten gradually to let the pressure bleed down.

Maybe I messed up, but I snapped one bolt.

I am not sure if I can do this over properly.

I wish I could find the manual and someone to help.

It was the rear-most lower rocker bolt, and luckily it snapped completely after it came out.

How big's your mailbox? I can scan the relevant parts from my '00 manual, they are probably close (and better then nothing).

How on earth did you snap a bolt AFTER removing it? Boy... man of steel! Remind me never to shake hands with you

At least it's (presumably) a stock Harley part, should be very easy to get. I can scan the appropriate page from the parts manual as well so you can show it to the service guy and make sure you get the right bolt.

Reep,

I borrowed from the X-1 Files the link for the 96 S1 manual in PDF format. Gave me the pic of the setup and the bolt torque sequence. I really appreciate the offer to scan though. It seems that anytime I need something, my wife has moved it and promises me it is "somewhere". It will turn up when I least need it.

Besides doing the work myself, I find Badweb as my primary resource, and it makes me chuckle when I tell the dealer things that they are not even aware of. Just wish there were Northern Westchester, NY gatherings like they have in CA. They get the great weather and all the fun.

First off, forgive me for asking so many questions, but the rocker box repair seems to work. No leaks that I can see, and definitely better than the spray that was getting all over my jeans.

After starting it up, it will not hold an idle, and the choke does nothing to help. I warmed it up a bit holding the throttle at around 1500rpm, but that did not help either. The only thing I played with besides the front rocker box were the header nuts on the front. Backed them out a bit and then back in to make sure they were not rusted stuck.

My guess would be an air leak, and probably at the header. Would this be a symptom of such a problem?

Thanks for all the advice.

Could you have messed up the attachment of fast idle knob thingy? Does it have any effect at all?

You did not knock off the rubber carb boot that attaches to the heads did you? Check there for leaks.

All spark plug wires back on and connected? No shop rags stuffed in air intakes or anything?

Can't imagine much that could cause that from a rocker box gasket repair... it must be something simple...

Maybe the fast idle knob was messed up, because I remember that happening one time where it would not hold idle, and that fixed it. I forgot about that. Plugs and wires fine. Changed plugs to check. Rubber carb boot that attaches to head? Not sure which that is.

Isn adjuster just left, wants to replace my tank from a knockover in the lot. This means a chunk of change for go fast parts as I will just repaint it.

Leeaw,
I'm still confused and would like to understand.

"It was the rear-most lower rocker bolt, and luckily it snapped completely after it came out.

You snapped the head off of one of the main rockerbox bolts? I'm guessing too much locktite by the factory?

Let me take a guess ... he twisted off one of the 3 little 1/4" grade 8 bolts that sits on the floor of the rocker box, while tightening it.

It's damn easy to do ... the torque spec seems high to me ... I've taken to using a 1/4" drive torque wrench and going for the low end of the specified range. Either that or a claw hammer, works on anything.
