One of the tech support guys at Dyno Jet rides an S3, so while I was there for Tuning Link training I had my S3 and he showed me a MAP he thinks is the best for any buell. It's a Zero.S MAP with the Optional 02 sensor set at #1, That way the 02 sensor controls the closed loop as it should but with a +1 bias. I used it while I was there and it worked great. When I got back home I used that thought process but after speaking to Brian Nallin, I modified it by trying the Closed Loop at zero's and then told "Tuning Link" in power mode (Open Loop) to set the A/F at 13.5. I got 99.85 hp with 80 ft lbs of torque, and my S3 ThunderBagger got me into the Bonneville 130 MPH Club. ... I then used that same idea in the expanded Closed Loop area of the XB's I ran. As stated above one 1050 Kit made 103 hp. The problem is that PC3's are getting hard to come by and DJ does not want to talk about PC on Buells. Their experence was that if you didn't understand how the Closed Loop worked even down loading a stock MAP could be a problem depending on the engine mods. They had too many come-backs and most people think PC's don't work on Buell's. I would love to have one of the new USB PC's for my Buell. ...Hope this helps. ...Terry |

"I would love to have one of the new USB PC's for my Buell." Yes... That WOULD be nice wouldn't it? Just for the record... I have a PCIII working just fine. I have maps for a 12/Force/chopped airbox/re-routed breathers and 12/Force HEADER/DRUMMER pipe/chopped airbox/re-routed breathers. Odie... Yes, Dynojet does indeed say that you can adjust "The Box" with the use of the O2, but I don't trust them. I set my "closed loop enrichment" to +1 and then tuned around the box. It seems to work quite well. The Force's power delivery still sucks, but other than that, the PC itself is great. Buelldyno... a "zero" map would be great for a pretty stock Buell but once you start doing anything funky with the exhaust or intake you'll need to change the shape of the fuel curve as well as the level. A zero map will not work well at all for a Force piped Buell. |

Remember the Zero is for the Closed Loop area and must be used with a +1 bias on the 02 sensor. All Open Loop areas are set at 13.5 using the Dyno Jet "Tuning Link" software. ... Terry |

Ahhh... I was confused. I thought you were saying that it was zero'd all the way but with the +1 bias. By bad . |

Some Great answer here. I didn't know if the S3 or X1 maps on the web site would work with the XB engine. My configuration isn't to far off from stock so I guess I'll start with the zero map and go from there. If your shopping for the K&N PowerCommander III (marked as II) for the S3 on eBay I would look at K&N's web store first, you might be surprised with the price (pn# 83804-211). Setup: Stock ECM, K&N Filter, 12R Airbox, Ceramic Coated Header, Buell Race Muffler, Buell Race Plugs. |

Buelltroll, e-mail me at t.parsley@harleyvallejo.com. We are about 2 hours away and want all Buell's to run great regardless of where they were purchased or serviced. |

Hey Buelldyno_guy, I have an 01-S3T with a White Bros. E-series, gutted airbox with K&N filter and the plastic venturi adapter on the throttle body, race ECM, and re-routed breathers to a Jaz catch-can. I ran an indicated 140 MPH a couple years ago and it was still climbing but I shut her down because I was near redline. I had one of those free dyno runs which showed 89.9 HP at the wheel at 6000 RPM. It was a nice linear ramp up to that point with no dips at all. That was last year with over 40K-miles on the motor! Now I have one of the new ULY's and have about 1700 miles of big smiles. My S3 feels like an ancient arcaic POC compared to the ULY! I hate the super quiet muffler and wonder if eliminating the active exhaust would screw it up so bad that it could not be tuned right? Don't get me wrong, I just want a better sound but not nearly as loud as my S3. What are your thoughts? Supposedly the new ULY has a different map than the other XB's to perform better at lower RPM's? BC Steve |

Performance is all about a balance between what you can suck in, compress / burn and then get back out. I am sure that Buell will offer a race kit (ECM, Air Cleaner & Muffler) and if they don't some of us will develop our own. I get my XB12X in mid Sept and plan on working on some type of Ti force pipe and muffler. As Manager of "Performance Services" at H-D Buell of Vallejo, we will be fitting a AIM Data Acquisition System on my bike to develop some performance parts. ... Terry |

Thanks Terry! I need to ride over there one of these days since I'm not too far. I'm in the mountains above Santa Cruz and the ULY was made for mountain roads for sure! Best handling bike I ever rode and truly enjoying it! BC Steve P.S. Anyone wanna buy my S3T? Besides the mods I mentioned above, I also have a works performance rear shock, Race Tech valves and springs in the front forks, Banke Shifter and lots of extra parts too! $6000 and it's yours! |

The digital readout for the O2 sensor is a great idea but it is going to be hard to keep an eye on the rpm's and the digital readout at the same time. A better way would be to have a data log setup that would record the O2 voltage while also recording the rpm. This could be downloaded into a laptop and then you could overlay a graph of the voltage on to the corresponding rpm and be very precise. Does anyone know how this could be done? |

The Techno Research Software allows for data aquistion to a PDA or Laptop for serveral miles and will chart it. Some of this sites sponsers sell the software. "The VDSTS also turns your PC, PDA or Handheld Computer into a data recorder by allowing you to record runs of several miles for later viewing and analysis. This data-logging feature can capture a series of readings and transfer them to a spreadsheet." http://www.technoresearch.com/Products/VDSTS(Motorbike)/VDSTS-Motorbike.htm |

Here is how we found the system we are installing on out Race Bike. I Googled "Data Acquisition" and found AIM, they were one of the first to develop systems for bikes. We will be getting a 8 chanel system and I will be capturing T/P, RPM, A/F for both the front and rear cylinders. It will also have a three axis gyro so I can map the track. The remaining channels will be used for rider input data. So there is no confusion the "Race Team" only ECM we use allows very complex mapping and can not be purchased as a Buell part. Race Teams get it from the Buell Race Department and it cannot be used on the street. ... Terry |

Does the PCIII have to be installed on the bike in order to load a map to it? |

If the closed-loop section is expanded on the XB, what are its limits, as the map display on a laptop presumably shows the 'old' area. I want to zero the zone but am afraid of making a mistake in the expanded part of the zone. Since my injectors are further away fron my inlet valves I get puddling at tickover. Is it ok to use the O position for the O2 sensor setting,if that is the leanest even though I have the uprated one, or does the '1' position change the way the ecu reads the messages? |

I have a Force pipe and I use the "0" enrichment. It seems to work better than the "1", but the Force is known to not flow so well at the low end anyway... As far as "The Box" on an XB. I extend the non tuned area to 4500RPM. Other than that I leave it alone. |

I have had problems with my twin inlet conversion as the butterflies need to be more 'open' to achieve a good tickover, especially since the bigger injectors needed for the top end chuck too much fuel in and this is the area of the map that according to several respected posters here should not be altered with the PC111. I set the O2 change to position '1' as I'm not yet sure if position '0'allows the hipo O2 sensor to work properly. The air bleed screws that my special throttle-body has helped but what was really happening was that the 'brain' was getting confused by the messages from the TPS. This was causing the revs to 'hang' after the throttle was closed, which made riding in traffic a little fraught, and ruined the quality of the gearchange(!) Maz, the UK's foremost independent Buell gnu suggested that I slot the holes for the TPS and move it around relative to the butterfly shaft to try and 'trick' the ECU. The PC111 display shows throttle opening, so I closed the butterflies shut and then moved the tps to read '0'. Fully opening the throttle gave a reading of '450' so I now knew the relationship between the figures I could see on my laptop and actual 0 and 100% values. Maz had suggested that the normal value shown by his dongle gadget for TPS at tickover is about 8. Multiplying that by 4.5 gave me '36'. I opened the butterflies with the idle-screw to display that value and started the bike. A bit of throttle-stop adjusting and 'swinging' the TPS gave a pretty good idle but, more importantly, the engine returned to idle like a standard bike after the throttle was opened and closed. Now I can concentrate on enjoying the top-end rush and trying the three different lengths of Velocity stack I've made.... |
