Has anyone had trouble with their seat lock on an S3? Mine has turned so that the notches won't line up, the key won't fit inside the lock. Should I try to rotate the whole assembly? My cell phone is locked inside which is actually pretty nice.

New Style Buell grips

I want to save anyone of you interested in these some grief. These new Buell grips indicate in the box "96 and later models except S2 and S2T". This is WRONG Buell has made an error. The late model controls 1999 and beyond use a smaller base circle in the throttle slide. This design requires more twisting than previuosly as it has less mechanical advantage. If this later grip/twist slide is placed in the earlier control box there is insufficient adjustment to tighten the cables because of the smaller circle.

I learned the hard way.

Jmartz,

Please, don't tell me so! I just got back from installing the new grips on my 98 S1W.

I thought the cables were tight enough, but I guess I won't be running at WOT without replacing the throttle grip.

Cheers,
Semi

Sem:

The throttle slide can be removed from the grip by standing on it and breaking it. The plastic is quite brittle. You still have to contend with the problem that the switch box on the clutch side is ('99 and later) is wider by about 1/4 inch. The grip is shorter and will leave a gap aginst the switch box. I've got them on but it was a lot of work and the clutch side doesn't look quite right. $16 down the drain in the name of R & D. The company owes me 1.

My attempt to install '99 and later controls on my 1996 bike bombed.

I had wanted to do the conversion because of the superior signal light switch in these. I also liked the finger adjustment of the throttle cables and thought that not having that silly nylon guide would make easier to reassemble after cable maintenance.

For starters the connectors were different and not sold separately. No problem I had gotten pins and and was going to extract, solder and reinstall.

Then the cables were different. No problem I had gotten new ones in anticipation.

Two things finally made me cease and desist. The first is that the throttle needs to be twisted more for the same amount of pull and I thought that I had to twist enough already. Lastly, and this the the biggy, the anti-rotation pins were in different locations requiring drilling of new holes. If you ever tried to drill on the the face of a small tube you might understand how diffcult it is. In addition to this, chrome is a very hard substance.

A side comment: I know that the blind cover on the earlier clutch side box was likely the on/off switch for the lights which by law must not be present in US models. Why is there a blind cover on the throttle side of the later boxes? Also the clutch box has an ugly "spigot" coming out parallel to the cable. What could that sructure possibly be for? Finally painted phillips head screws replaced the earlier recessed allen types and these are surface mounted where the scratches from being driven in and out are easier to see. I guess this is all in keeping up with the Buell theme of lesser quality as the years progess.

Jose; I put 2000 M2 controls on my 98 S1. It was a piece of cake. Easy as pie. Guess those 96 bikes were still prototypes.

p.s. I drove the XB9R. It was as you predicted, low on power. I am keeping my name on the list while I ponder some more.

Dave:

Glad to hear from you. Has your move to Atlanter bombed? Regarding those controls, I suspect th wiring on the '98's mighth be more compatible. You did not address the antirotaton pin issue. What did you do, grind them off? The old contols were twice as expensive.

I just purchased a set of bar end mirrors for my '97 M2. Went out to the garage to install them last night and for the life of me, couldn't get my bar end plugs out. The throttle side plug came out, but I couldn't get the anchor part out of the bars. The non-throttle side seems to be even worse. Loosening the allen bolt does nothing at all. Any tips, or is it dremmel time?

Try loosening the allen screw a half inch or so and then wacking it back into the bar to jar the anchoring part loose. Then yank on the screw with a pair of vice grips and maybe tap on the vice grips with a hammer to help extract the stubborn bar end plug. You might want to loosen the screw all the way then thread it back in at least four turns to be sure you are safe prior to the wackage maneuver. It worked for me just the other day when I was swapping mirrors for bar ends in a road to track reconfiguration.

A question for those who know. When an X1 is equipped with the Crossroads Performance handlebar (part number B-2060) do the controls come into contact with the stock X1 tank when the bars are turned to full lock left and right?

Caboose, the horn and the starter buttons come close to the tank but they don't touch.
I have them on my X-1 and i love them... well, had them. I low-sided and bent them up pretty bad on the All Cali Ride. I'll probably replace them with the same...

I bought a small tank on Ebay for it. I just have to get it painted first. I like the looks of both, so I'll use the small one for play.

You know it sure is hard to reccomend a supplier who you can never get hold of....

In the continuing saga of - Loki wishes to change the ergos via a new h-bar. Some of you may remember way back in march I had ordered a new bar from someone. Well the first week of may it showed at the door. I was all giddy with thoughts of the coming weekend. Alas, it was not to be. The following morning it was discovered that it had been made with 1" stock. Made the phone call, shipped it back the same afternoon(with delivery confirm). Was told that they would get right on it and correct the error. So be it, an honest mistake. Call them back a couple weeks later to check on the status(didn't figure I would be waiting another 5 weeks). Was told it was being shipped the end of week(fri-sat). On the following monday I get a call from them. Apparently the bar was shipped to the plater on friday and not to me. Says it should be on its way by the end of the week(again?). Fri-sat come and go(ya know this is the long weekend and all). mon-tues come and go. Place a call on wed , no one there, ask for a call back. fri-sat come and go again, no call or bar. Loki is now really frustrated and getting hot. Call monday(today) just before leaving for work and finally get something other than a machine. Being polite and all. The lady asks for a name and number so the owner can call me(he aint in again and no one knows when he is going to be in). So I come home for lunch(6:45pm EST). place another call to the shop, no one there but that infernal machine! As soon as I hang up it rings. It is the ones I just tried to call. Asks what I was wondering about my order. I says" I want to know where my bar is at?". Silence follows, "you haven't got it yet?". "No!" This guy remembers making it due to it was a returned order. he knows he turned it over to the packer to get shipped(just can't give me a date without the paperwork). Now he says I will make ya another one tonight, get it to the plater tonight and back tomorrow and shipped out. "So what are my chances of having it in my hands by friday(end of week again). "You will have a bar by friday or......."

I guess I will see......

Loki

Im not sure but i doubt the Duc.Monster bars will work with your X1 tank cover. For my M2 the elec.switch housings hit baddly on both sides of the 5 gal. tank. The ergos were really nice though (imo)Something like Peter shows on his S1 above might fit though.

Maybe a Duc.dealer would let you try some on though and let you return them if they dont fit,i think they cost me over$75.

Does anyone have any info on a decent set of clipons for an X1? I sit too upright on mine & would like to get a little more of my weight over the front end. Not looking for anything that requires tearing the damn forks apart either. Crossroads bars arent bad, but the $$ sux. Grounder suggested clipons so I think thats the route I wanna go.

Besides AFAM another place that sells lower bars is whaccessories.com ,they're in the U.S. but list some bars that are from Germany, maybe you can find out where and find them in your area. They list some specs on rise, etc but dont show the width of the bars in the handebar clamp area(which is where fitting problems can occur with the unusual angled handlebar clamps Buells use)

Telefix style bars should be THE stock bars on all Buells.

Google turned up the following links.

American Site: http://www.spec2.com/clips.html#clips
Aussie Site: http://www.motorcycle-parts.com.au/clip-ons.htm

Here's a picture of the Telefix bars. I have what they are now calling the Profi bars along with four of the interlocking 5/8" riser-spacers (two on each side).

Jrh/Blake,

I have no clue how it feels to have clip-ons on a Buell.
How different is the seating position, i dont mind going a bit lower than the stock bar.
If i have the specs of the stock bar i could compare in my head with the difference in types of bars available. With clip-ons i can never do that because the reference is completely gone.

Maybe its just a matter of buy and try.

Thx, Fresh

In my experience clip-ons feel great in the twisties but cruising will hurt your wrists within half an hour. After that numbness sets in...and after an hour the shoulders start burnin'. For me the stock bars are the opposite...felt uncomfortable at a pace but nice for cruising around. Anyone know if there are any long term adverse affects for riding with numb hands for extended periods of time?

I think I may be lookin' for rearsets soon. Dragged my boots a little today...stopped there to save my pegs/controls. Where do all those Pro Thunder and Lightning racers get those Sportster-like rearsets? I think that's the position I'd like...perched up high and forward.

That's what's so great about the Telefix multi-adjustables. You can add up to 1-1/4" worth of riser, rotate them about all axes. I bet you could darn near match the stock position. Not quite, but close. The joints when tightened properly do not .oosen. Mine, with risers, have been track tested and passed with flying colors. On more than one occasion, braking for my life, the rear tire floating airborn over the tarmac, my entire 220 LB (with gear) came to bare on the Profi clipons. They never complained, they never budged.
