Mike --- Buell will probably help you out --- even if your dealer won't. The rear tank mount torque spec is 9 to 11 foot-pounds.

AFTER ONLY 2100 MILES MY M2 HAS DECIDED TO SELF DESTRUCT THERE ARE SEVERAL CRACKS OPENING UP UNDER THE SEAT ON THE TAIL. THE DEALER SAYS THAT IT IS COVERED UNDER THE STANDARD WARRANTY NOW BUT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED FOR FUTURE. IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM OR JUST A FREAK

I have a 97 M2 which I want to do a few cosmetic modifications to. The first involves getting rid of or trimming down the huge license plate holder. Any tips on doing this? Should I just get out the dremmel and start cutting, or does someone sell new brackets anywhere?

Matt

Matt,
Your choice. Some like to do their own mods and play the Dremel game. Others click on links to the sponsers of the site here (hint: top of the page) and buy license plate relocators/eliminators.

Buellsht,
Sounds like just an anomoly.

westy01,
Banke performance has a fender eliminator that consists of a plate holder/tool box/ turn signal mount. Its made of stainless and aluminum, powder coated black or polished.I installed one on my M2 and it greatly increased the strength of the rear tail, [it doesn't jump around like a frog on a hot rock no more]. I believe that the weight and the flexing of the stock fender caused the tail on my bike to crack.

Matt, I didn't like the huge rear fender either so I took it off and went to town with a coping saw and a file. I took everything outside the 'tool box' off and used a hunk of metal from my room-mates Ducati Monster to mount up the plate. At the same time I threw on a pair of short stalk signals made by Lockhart-Phillips. It cleaned up the rear end very nicely. I'll post some pics when I get some.

Now, can anyone out there tell me if a S1 solo seat and rear section will bolt right on to a 01 M2? If I can do it without modifying the frame I'd like to give it a whirl.

The girlfriend dumped me so I don't need the big seat anymore.

Besides, the shortened rearends look sweet anyway.

thanks,
c.j.

I put an S1 tail on my Y2000 M2.I think they retailed through Buell about $175(grey primer)+
i think you can order them in colors too.
The S1 tail seems to fit the M2 chassis real well
from its front on back to a little to rear of the
oil tank. From that area on back though the frames
differ greatly. The area where the rider sits is
pretty well supported by the stock frame, but the
rear, where a passenger would sit is left floating
and reqires a homemade bracket of some type. Also
the tail wont fit without removing(i had to saw
off)the steel strap on the frame(the one that your bolt goes through to hold seat in place).
I made a 1 piece bracket from eigth inch alum.sheet that supported the rear of the new tail + was also a mount for the t.signals + t.light.I used cardboard + alot of time to try for a hidden bracket(basiclly a rectangular sheet
folded over onto itself with the needed holes +
light mounting ears)I dont have the right camera
for a photo here. You could probably come up with
something that looks better yourself anyway.
As far as the overall looks,i think it looks great compared to that big thing they come with
now.Not as good as on the S1 frame though if you
looked at the 2 bikes side by side. The M2s frame
tubes(the angling ones that support the rear frame loop) show, on the S1 the S1 tail slightly
hides these + that rear frame loop is totally in
view(the lights hide it some though). If youre not
used to seeing an S1,this conversion looks pretty
nice. There is a photo in the bike photo archives
showing this done to someones M2,you might have to look a while to find it though. No bracket shot
but it shows the overall look.Anyways...when i saw the R-R-Customizing.com website a while ago
i ordered a c.fiber S1 to M2 style tail + am
eagerly waiting to get.

by the way. what color is your bike. i'm not sure the CF will look really good on my blue streak.

thoughts?

Ive been waiting about 2 months since i ordered
the RRC kit.Last week i got an e:mail from Thomas
Voll,the owner,saying they were having a little
trouble getting the c.f. quality up to their standards but it should be ready soon.
Its gonna be expensive,i think somewhere around
$600 inc. shipping,minus the actual seat.If it
ever arrives ive got a Buell euro style seat, which i tried on the S1 tail, its Really narrow towards the front($135)so i got a Corbin,
($350),havent tried it yet,its wider in front,but
the foam feels real hard.I suspect ill like the
Buell seat better.Since im also waiting on a set
of backordered Wiseco pistons,i havent gotten too
exited over the tail order wait yet.
I think i have to agree with you on the c.f.with
the blue,it might not look as good as your blue
tail section, but what do i know.
My bikes made up of a lot of different stuff, thats probably why i dont ever get to ride
it much,X1 front end,S1 cams,S+S cyl.,choice of
yellow, red, black tank in either size etc.
It does take some work to do the conversion if
you try the Buell S1 tail+of course you have to
cut the frame strap(maybe not if youre clever).
I think(but im definately not sure)the 1997 style M2
tail could fit your frame with no mods. Its a whole lot narrower+better looking(my opinion)but
it dosent have the shorter look you mentioned.
I read an older issue of Battle2Win (i dont have
anymore) concerning what body parts interchange.
Maybe you can find a back issue.

If any M2 owners are curious about how an S1
tail looks on an M2,someone has a photo in Cool
Buell Pics, archives, through Jan.30,2002.If you click his blue username, theres a view from another angle. It clearly shows the frame tubes i
was talking about earlier.I think maybe he didnt
remove the frame strap i mentioned i did.If you
dont mind cutting it out,i think the rear of the
tail sits a little lower, more like an S1.
John
PS Yeha! I just got an e:mail from RRC saying my new tail
section is ready to ship

I'm wondering how much you mean by "a bit".

If less than 1/8" use a die grinder or even some low grit sandpaper ending up with finer grit and finally a finishing sand paper like 600 wet and then polishing compound. You will end up with carbon fiber hair wherever you cut/gring/sand. Use a new sharp razor blade to shave them flush with the resin surface. This may or may not yield a quality surface finish. It just depends on the quality of the resin fill. Resin poor parts will have pits. You can fill them with special finishing treatments though. Just adds another layer of work to your effort.

Good luck!

John, It really wasn't anything special to it:

The CF comes with a clear coat which has to be sanded lightly (I used 400 grit wetsanding paper). Be careful so that you don't damage the fiber...

Then I applied a grey basecoat (filler, normally used for car-painting. It took four "rounds" of filler with sanding in between before the surface was perfect ;-)

Then a layer of white PPG basecoat (as specified on ASB, I think)

Three layers of topcoat

Two or three layers of clear

You don't have to use any "softening" additives in the paint (at least according to my painter).

Well, thats about it ;-)

I'm from Sweden so my English isn't that good but I hope you understand.

Cheers/ Jonas

To save me the cost of a toll call, do you mind if I ask what the cost of the Banke M2 license plate holder replacement was.

The price of the Banke fender eliminator was $125.00 plus shipping for the black powder coated one. I believe that the polished one was something like $145.00.If ya need more info call Banke at 831 335-1422.

Does anyone know how many 1999 Buell X1's were made in blue with the white stripe. Were they a limited edition? What color blue is it?

The blue race stripe X1's were a limited production color scheme. Not sure exactly the build number, 250 rings seems to pop into my head though. Not sure on the color.

I shaved down my CF front fender. It was a lot easier than I thought. I used a carbide cutter and high-speed grinding drums which left no loose fibers. The downside is that now the fender flops like a fish at idle. Oh well.
