I have read through most/all of the painting related posts and want to know if there is anything special that needs to be done to prepping the tank on a 01 cyclone before painting: sealers, special primer??? There will be some minor repair to the side, and the new decals will be used. I know many of the problems before were decals bubbling, but have also heard and seen paint bubbling on these tanks. Anyone who has done this or know the proper process, please help!! | ||

I'm gonna chime in here, but by no means am I an expert. If you are repairing portions of the tank I would suggest sanding them out of the tank and not building them back up with bondo or something similar, depending on depth of course, then striping the whole tank, cleaning it and then using your favorite primer to fill some of the light scratched left from hitting it with 220 then follow the procedure/recommendations that Al Leighton has from American Sport Bike, if you want PM me and I can send it to you also has he has sent it to me once, I had good sucess painting my M2 tank but did get some bubbles which turned out to have a couple of reasons for which I can let you know. | ||

The only thing is not to have way too much Primer in any one spot. The primer being too heavy will cause the Paint to bubble again, the primer acts like a sealer. The Fuel tanks needs to be able to release the gas flumes, though the plastic allows that to happen. The Primer Buells uses is PPG K36 |
