The ecm doesn't come up with an error code 23 (or any error code) for no reason, I suggest a close inspection of the front injector wiring. Error codes can come from open circuits, short circuits, unexpected behaviour or any combination of these(depending on the item). Seems a big coincidence Keith (it's good to see you posting again, I liked your old profile pic but the new one shows you have been very busy on your bike!) to have an injector failure reported by the ecm and you are reporting "it runs very poorly seemingly on only one cylinder (will not idle)". Hope this helps...(first check the wiring most recently disturbed or added)

Blake, this is slightly off topic, you stated:
"Might not need the race ECM, but it gets rid of the lingering throttle-on condition that the stock ECM exhibits upon closing the throttle during deceleration."
Do you or anyone know how the stock ecm does this, I know it's not from spark control, and I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but since running the MegaSquirt FI on my bike the engine braking is significantly greater, and I'm extremely curious as to any ideas on how they do it?

Ingemar- Craigster made the same suggestion above- that it was probably one of the connections. With the trouble code 23, I'm thinking I have a poor connection between the PC and the front injector. It will be sometime this weekend before I can dig into it.

Blake- I realize that you are kidding, but from what I recall, the stock exhaust on yours sorta cooked the kickstand switch. On the XBs, the kickstand is mounted more forward under the primary, well away from the exhaust heat. I also remember yours running fine until you tried to to let the clutch out. This is not what is happening here although you had me going there for a minute...

M1- I labeled the front and rear injector plugs on the Buell wiring harness so that I could get them back to the correct location. You are correct that the PC does not care which one it is connected to. You would think that if this was the problem, it would run like crap all the time if at all.

Regarding the TPS to PC connection, I carefully stripped back a bit of insulation and soldered the PC wire to the TPS green wire. I'm not crazy about electrical connections made mechanically.

Like you, I grounded the PC using the coil mounting bolt which my DVOM said was a low resistance connection.

I have the connections as you say and when the throttle is moved, the PC's bar graph indicates throttle position. And good question, but I did show the PC where closed and open throttle is.

I really appreciate everyone's inputs. I will dig into the connectors at the front injector either Friday or Saturday and report back.

Keith

My tps wire is brownish or violet. I didn't have a green wire.

A brown, a green and an orange I think...

I too have three, but only one runs back to the ecm according to the schematics and there wasn't a green one.

At last I have good news! On Friday, I removed only the front injector connections and reconnected them. The bike fired and ran on only one cylinder… It now seemed that I had at last found the problem.

I then completely disconnected the PC and studied the connectors. The connector going from Buell wiring harness to the PC and on to the front injector had a problem with one of the two flat pins. It was pushed far enough into the body of the connector that it was no longer able to make an electrical connection with the bike’s wiring harness connector.

I gently pulled on the pin expecting to hear a snap indicating that it was locked into place but it never happened and as a result, the pin did not stay where it should have. Further investigation showed that the pin was inserted upside down, apparently from the factory. When I rotated it 180 degrees and reinstalled it into the connector body, I then head the “click” that I was listening for and the pin was now locked into place.

I reconnected the PC to the bike’s harness and the injectors and the bike fired right up and ran perfectly.

I really appreciate all of you who responded. Even if your suggestion didn't result in eliminating the problem, you still helped eliminate a variable. A special thank you to Craigster, M1, Ingemar, Opto, and Steve S. for your help. This is what makes the BadWeB so great!

Let the tweaking begin!
Keith

That's great news!

So,,, when do you get the dyno with A/F meter? : ) That should definitely be part of your new home/garage budget.

Great news. Glad you found the problem.

May I suggest you look for a funny typo in your message?

Did you ever by chance check for paper towels in the wrong places? joker

I think Rossi may have had a paper towel problem this weekend.

Since I fitted 10% bigger injectors to my dual inlet xb9 I may have to change the O2 setting back to '0' from '1' ('2'when I had an air leak!)
Will this have any other effect than weakening throughout the range? ie will it prevent the PC111 working inside the box within the box?
